NBA has sniffed around Louisville in the 2000s. I think the city was considered for the Grizzlies. Kentucky Colonels was a rumored name for the relocated team.

In my opinion, i truly believe that San Juan would be a GREAT landing spot for MLB.

If you don't mind getting stabbed to death in the locker room and your killer never being brought to justice.

Also, are you kidding me about getting players to play in San Juan?

Double edged sword for PR guys living in country during the season. Lots of pressure from family and others for money, tickets, etc.

In my opinion, i truly believe that San Juan would be a GREAT landing spot for MLB. Puerto Rico and its people are absolutely nuts about baseball. Hiram-Bithorn Stadium could be expanded and made into a great venue. When the Expos were moving, they played half of their games there and sold out every game. Its festive, lively and has an amazing vibe and truly unique look!! Imagine if all the players in MLB, who hail from Puerto Rico or Latin America decided to go home and play for the franchise in San Juan? MLB could have a dynasty on their hands. Not only would you get into Puerto Rico, but the team could become the team that all of Latin Americans latch onto. That fan base would be as loyal as they come. I know its all hypothetical, but nothing stays the same forever. Just move the Rays there. San Juan Rays has a GREAT ring to it!

you have amazing opinions on things

Owning an MLS franchise is the foot in the door for the US media rights to all soccer show on tv. Just recently the US national team pulled out of it.

But everything else show those owners own the media rights and make bank off of it.

That’s essentially why franchise fees go up. It doesn’t matter if your MLS team is good.

As long as Americans watch EPL, La Liga, LigaMX, Champions League and those international tournaments in large numbers those owners get paid off those mega tv deals.

The Hampton Roads area of VA is a more interesting possibility than Richmond. It would also be close enough to Richmond to pull fans from that population.

If the area were to get the NFL, just put the stadium right in the middle in Williamsburg and cater to both markets. I don’t think this arrangement could work for any of the other major pro sports leagues though.

Wait, I’m very confused. How do MLS owners have media rights to non-MLS soccer?

ESPN, Viacom, Peacok/NBC, Fox, and BeIn pay for media rights for all of the Euro leagues, major tournaments, etc. How do MLS owners benefit form those large television rights deals?

Not including Kroenke who owns an MLS team and Arsenal.

The SUM organization apparently owns all the rights that are purchased

Even if it’s on like ESPN

quote:

Additionally, MLS owns a 75% stake in Soccer United Marketing (SUM), the company that handles media rights for American soccer. The other 25% of SUM was sold to Providence Equity Partners in 2011. SUM coordinates soccer matches, sets up venues, earning a portion of the revenue for these services. SUM also has exclusive marketing rights for any soccer match televised in the United States. It makes a large portion of its money by selling these rights to interested broadcasters. 75% of these profits are then recycled back into MLS and its investor-operators, and the other 25% go to Providence Equity Partners.

Title IX has killed men’s soccer for the US. I’m not a soccer fan but if it became a scholarship sport, there would be a lot more interest.

If football broke away from the NCAA, this could happen.
