Future Pro Sports Cities?
Posted by Buckeye Backer on 11/23/21 at 7:36 am1623
Which cities, that do NOT currently have a pro sports franchise, could you see hypothetically supporting a pro sports franchise in the future..and which sport do you think could they support? Could any of these cities, 25 years from now, have a pro sports team?
Metro Populations:
San Juan - 2,350,126
Louisville - 1,285,439
Richmond - 1,263,617
Hartford - 1,214,295
Birmingham - 1,115,289
Omaha - 967,604
Albuquerque - 916,528
El Paso - 868,859
Quebec City - 800,296
Boise - 749,202
In my opinion, i truly believe that San Juan would be a GREAT landing spot for MLB. Puerto Rico and its people are absolutely nuts about baseball. Hiram-Bithorn Stadium could be expanded and made into a great venue. When the Expos were moving, they played half of their games there and sold out every game. Its festive, lively and has an amazing vibe and truly unique look!! Imagine if all the players in MLB, who hail from Puerto Rico or Latin America decided to go home and play for the franchise in San Juan? MLB could have a dynasty on their hands. Not only would you get into Puerto Rico, but the team could become the team that all of Latin Americans latch onto. That fan base would be as loyal as they come. I know its all hypothetical, but nothing stays the same forever. Just move the Rays there. San Juan Rays has a GREAT ring to it!

San Juan would support baseball, but that's it. And they would have to come up with money for a better stadium... Hiram Bithorn is under 20,000 capacity.
Louisville and Richmond would probably do well with a pro team, especially if it's just one. NFL makes the most sense with fewer games. Obviously in Louisville they could play at Papa John stadium while a new one got built. Richmond has nothing close to an NFL capable facility.

I could get behind a team in san juan. Only issue might be getting players to sign there. Im not sure what the tax structure and everything is like there.

Seattle would support a basketball team.
There might be an NFL team in London in the next ten years. Toronto and Mexico City have been discussed as possible expansion cities. Not sure that will happen though.
Not sure about MLB.

San Juan would be cool. Otherwise none of those cities need a pro sports team. The larger cities are all close to other major markets and the smaller cities are all isolated and terrible fits for a pro franchise.

I went to an Austin FC game earlier this year, it’s a great stadium and crowd

I don’t think San Juan population has the money to support an MLB franchise. Puerto Rico is a small island and it’s not especially wealthy. It would have the smallest economy and the smallest media market in the league. Louisville, Richmond and Hartford are too deep in other teams’ markets. I’d look for future expansion to be in cities that already have other professional teams like Austin, Montreal, Las Vegas, etc.

A bigger issue would be getting players to not want to sign there.

If you can legitimately move yourself and/or your business, you may be able to reduce your income tax bill down to almost nothing. As with any US tax issue, caution is required. By moving to Puerto Rico through one of the tax programs – which require you to have NOT lived there in the last fifteen years – you can take advantage of a 4% income tax rate, 0% dividend rate, and 0% capital gains tax rate. You and your business ACTUALLY need to move to Puerto Rico. It has to become your “tax home”.
Their tax structure has been bringing Americans, and their companies, there for years now.

quote:MLS is probably the best they could do and I really doubt that happens. Proximity to Nashville and Atlanta really take any chance away for a top league pro team.
