Yeah, I feel like Ricciardo has shot himself in the foot with the money grabbing jumps. I also feel that he may have lost a bit of his edge. It doesn't take much in F1 to lose your competitiveness.

Exactly, seems like unless something unexpected happens, which I suppose is always possible, his options seem to be renew with Mercedes(looking less and less likely) or swap places with George. That would be a bummer, to go from the best car on the grid to the second worst.

Very well could be the worst by the time he gets there, if Haas' 2021 gambit actually works and they field a better car under the new formula.

Could end up out of F1 all together.

Alpine - don’t see that
Alfa - not likely

I don’t not very familiar with the politics of F1, but why wouldn’t either of these want Bottas?

Alpine will be Alonso and (rumored) Gasly.

Alfa would probably prefer a young gun next to Gio if they can't come to a deal with Kimi.

Looks like they might finally "update" Monaco. I'm happy and kind of sad.
quote:

Unknown to most observers, the principality’s contract to host the event, struck between former supremo Bernie Ecclestone and the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) in 2010, expired with the race won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen 10 days ago.

This offers F1’s bosses, headed by new chief executive Stefano Domenicali, the chance to seek reform from the ultra-conservative ACM.

As we reported last week, F1 have pledged to review the layout of the tight circuit, which has remained largely unaltered since its inception in 1929 and is no longer conducive to modern cars racing wheel-to-wheel. Domenicali’s No 2, Ross Brawn, will lead this work — using simulation technology. The process is at any early stage and no specific areas of the two-mile track have been earmarked for change.

The "race" is nothing but a formality anymore. Short of a wreck or mercedes sabotaging bottas, its boring.

One overtake and it was the freaking haas cars at the beginning.

That's where I think he's headed. No way I'd go back to Williams if I were him, and I don't see a possibility of him being at any other team next year.

There's simply no way to create a good race at Monaco in a modern F1 car. They're too big, have too much downforce, and too much braking performance.

The solution is to make Monaco a non-championship race and use a Monaco-only spec car. I say "non-championship race" because the top teams would never agree to a points-paying race where everyone has equal machinery. They spend too much money to gain an advantage. If it doesn't pay championship points there could be a problem getting full participation, and that would be a problem. Obviously it would be easier if the FIA could mandate it as a points-paying race. It would be billed as the "Driver's Race" because it would be all about skill, not what team you're on.

Compared to an F1 car the Monaco spec car will be shorter and narrower, have very low downforce, and old-fashioned steel brakes. Make it sound and drift like an early 70s F1 car and it will be a huge hit.

Here's footage from one of the Monaco historic races this year.

One can always dream.

I think he's out to, but if I were him I take the Kimi route and drive at Williams until they make me quit. Take the paycheck with no real expectations and just travel around the world driving fast cars.

Just like Heikki kovalainen. How many Finnish F1 careers will Hamilton end?

Man, what would I give to see Hamilton and Max in the same machinery for one season. It will be the best season we would have had since 2005/06.

It's a shame we'll never see it, but I guess that's just part of F1. The car and team is just as important as the driver.

The car is more important than the driver and has been for a long time.

I'm not saying Joe Sixpack can hop in Hamilton's car and make a lap, let alone win a race, but any number of guys in the field would do well and win often with the same equipment.

And you could put Hamilton in a Ferrari and he isn't winning.

Then why is Mercedes paying Hamilton that much money. That’s way too much of an investment to just not be “upsetting the apple cart”

Bottas was held in very high regard when joining Merc and he still gets beat regularly. No doubt there are drivers that could do well in the Merc, but less than 25% would probably put up comparable numbers.

Verstappen hits back at Red Bull's rivals after flexi-wing criticism
quote:

Max Verstappen hit back at Red Bull's rivals after complaining about their use of flexi-wings, insisting his car is 'within the rules'.

A number of teams have been criticised over how much their rear wing bends, which could provide a small performance advantage in races, with the FIA now introducing tests to put a halt to illegal movement.

However, the tests won't come into force until after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, meaning Verstappen's car will not require any modifications at the race.

'I can understand of course other people looking into things when we are doing a good job with the car this season,' Verstappen said, speaking to Sky Sports.

'I can understand people complaining... but it's all within the rules so far. There's nothing wrong with it.'

He added: 'Of course, they try to slow us down.'
