Since we are dropping the pretense and this is just pay for play, do they need to find some girls softball or tennis players to pay 50,000 a year to not ru afoul of title ix?

If the school isn’t paying this or marketing him to pay him this, title IX isn’t involved

The money is not paid by the schools, so title 9 doesn't apply

NIL is just a pay for play, money funnel. Calling it anything having to do with name, image or likeness is a joke and a fraud.

UT is somewhat trying to change the game with their strategy & making payments to entire position groups

BYU already had somebody sponsor their entire entire team a few months ago. The difference though is BYU boosters didn't create a fake charity to do it.

quote:

Every member of the BYU football team, including nonscholarship players, can now say he has a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal after the NCAA cleared such agreements last month that will allow student-athletes to profit on their fame and standing within the community.

Thursday, BYU Athletics announced an “enhanced agreement” with current corporate partner Built Brands, LLC, which produces Built Bar energy products, to support the football program, “while also pioneering separate innovative multi-year NIL agreement with individual members of the football team.”

According to a school news release, the agreements include “compensation to all members of the team, including compensation to all walk-on players in the amount comparable to the costs of tuition for the academic year.”

Are these booster donations tax deductible?

The total money pool will continue to expand at an accelerated rate, performance/roi means nothing

No way. There aren't enough super rich boosters to fund that sort of accelerating system and, more importantly, doing it in irrational ways. The current jump has put way too much focus on spending lots for high school recruits and it ignores the reality that recruiting is now a 4-5 year endeavor. Guys like Ewers won't keep resetting the market at the expense of hurting your established, good players (who aren't able to make as much).

Also, you risk an issue like what LSU experienced where jealousy causes instability. There are only so many guys on a team who can get those megadeals and the portal makes it easy for those left out to leave without consequence.

How does shite like this not end up dividing the locker room?

Yeah this isn't sustainable, especially with emotional teenagers.

Your established guys who have earned it and are upperclassmen? Sure I think that would work.

18-19 year old recruits and 2nd year guys? No way.

I think that's why the UTOL thing is a "charity" but I'm not sure if that will ultimately hold weight. If that happens, it strikes down a big avenue for booster funneling. Ironically the argument for charity would be stronger if NIL didn't exist.

Correct. It’s still very early, hell there’s going to be things happen we haven’t thought of or even imagined. It’s going to be a mess, and paying one or 2 big guys like this will not always be a good idea.

In the end, it’ll likely work out very similarly to professional athlete endorsements but we will have to go through a couple years before it starts to round itself out.

Agreed. Same with the regs on the transfer portal. They have to make all this stuff work within the framework and the ESD is the big thing fricking everything up. They either need to scrap ESD or make the portal in line with signing days.

Why is everyone in this thread pretending like players haven’t been paid like this for years and years. It’s just done in the open now. Ain’t shite gonna change. Texas will still suck all while spending millions on players and whatever else. And the same 4 teams will be in the playoff

You think every offensive lineman at Texas has been getting $50k?

When do players start using the portal as a "holdout" threat?

Get me more NIL cash or I hit the portal.
