At least for now.

quote:

The Atlanta Falcons kept the veteran quarterback on their roster past 4 p.m. ET Saturday, triggering the guarantee on a $10 million roster bonus due in 2026.

Cousins was benched in Week 16 by the Falcons after a stretch with nine interceptions and just one touchdown pass in five games. Atlanta announced at the time that rookie Michael Penix Jr., the No. 8 pick in the 2024 draft, would be the team's quarterback "moving forward."

quote:

It seemed then like the Falcons and Cousins would part ways after the season. However, Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot said in his end-of-season news conference that they were "comfortable" going ahead with Cousins, 36, as their backup quarterback.

Many thought it was posturing, that the Falcons were looking to keep Cousins' trade value. But a league source told ESPN that the most likely scenario at this moment is Cousins wearing an Atlanta uniform in 2025. Of course, that could change if an attractive trade offer pops up.

If they wait until a team is desperate, they will get a decent pick or two.

The legendary Aaron Rodgers is still available for free so zero chance they'd get anything for MAGA Kirk for the time being

Cousins has been an NFL starter since 2012. Simpletons here have been bashing him the entire time.

The guy is a good player.

The knock on him is/was you couldn't win big games with him. He's had solid supporting casts most of his career and he's about to turn 37 with one playoff win, obviously against the Saints.

While that is certainly true, frick that lying sack of shite. Hope he spends next year sitting on the sidelines for wasting the Falcons’ time last season.

He was great at the beginning of the season.
He was terrible those last 5 to six games.

Very Jekyll and Hyde. Have to wonder if it was the injury or if his age caught up with him and he just can’t hold up for an entire season anymore.

It makes the QB carrousel more interesting now. Some team like the Browns, Giants or Steelers will be without a starting level QB to start the season.

He was decent until he developed arm and shoulder problems after getting hit during the Saints game. Then he really dropped off the cliff.

They can still trade him but it won't make sense for them until after June 1st. So they have the option of holding onto him as a backup or unloading him if they get a good enough offer.

Cousins asking again to be cut, wants to go to Cleveland, but the Browns aren't paying that salary. Browns want Atlanta to eat the salary. Falcons expected him to be a no show next month.

quote:

"I'm not going to be foolish to think that he's going to show up for voluntary work right now," Morris said, via Pro Football Talk. "We're dealing with a business-type mode right now. I don't think he'll be there. If he is, we'll welcome him with open arms. But I'm not going to be fool enough to make myself get worked up and angry about Kirk Cousins missing voluntary workouts."

looks like two options left-

quote:

With Cousins and the Falcons reportedly at odds behind closed doors since the club surprisingly spent a first-round pick on quarterback Michael Penix Jr. last offseason, the only feasible paths forward are:
1.) Cousins remaining in Atlanta as the NFL's highest-paid backup

2.) the Falcons eventually granting Cousins' request to be released, so that he can freely explore a potential starting opportunity elsewhere.
