ESPN’s JJ Redick Blasts Double Standard in Ja Morant Suspension

ESPN analyst JJ Redick does not believe Grizzlies star Ja Morant should receive a massive punishment for his recent off-court incident, in which he appeared to display a gun in an Instagram live video Saturday.
The situation comes after he was suspended for eight games in March for displaying a gun at a nightclub in Colorado. While Memphis has currently suspended Morant from team activities pending the league’s investigation into the issue, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski believes that the 23-year-old could face a “lengthy suspension” from the league this time around.

However, on an episode of ESPN’s First Take on Wednesday, Redick stated that Morant should not receive an extraordinary punishment for his behavior because he has not committed a crime.
quote:
“I’m not condoning the behavior,” Redick said. “I’m not saying there should be no punishment. There should be consequences. You are the face of the league. You are representing the NBA. You are a role model to young kids. All of that. I don’t think (getting suspended for) half the season is the right answer.”
quote:
Redick also linked Morant’s situation to the behavior of some elected officials, such as Texas governor Greg Abbott, who regularly touts the purchase of guns despite a rash of mass shootings in his state in recent years.
“We’ve got mass shooting after mass shooting and nobody’s doing a damn thing about it, so I get why everyone is sensitive right now,” Redick said. “But there’s no consequence for this for Greg Abbott telling his constituents that they should go buy more guns, and then we have mass shooting after mass shooting in Texas. There’s no consequence for an elected Tennessee official to send out a Christmas card holding AR-15s with his young family, and then there’s a shooting in his very district.
“There’s no consequences to that, so why are we trying to lay down the hammer on a 23-year-old who didn’t break a law?! Explain that to me!”

That’s such a comical reach that it’s not worth a response.
Elected officials are just that. They’re up for election. if you disagree with what they do, vote them out.
Ja Morant is an employee of a private company. He is subject to their standards and rules.
I can post a picture on Facebook waving a pistol naked. It’s not against the law, but I’m probably getting fired.

Is it a good point if the gun accidentally goes off and he injures or kills himself or the other guy?

I agree with him that there should be no punishment and that there's a double standard, but not with his blaming mass shootings on guns

JJ Redick is a fricking idiot, just like Ja Morant. The problem isn’t guns, the problem is culture. The culture Morant is imitating. Taking away guns from the law abiding is beyond stupid. It’s evil. Criminals don’t obey laws. We have existing laws to prevent this bullshite, but left wing prosecutors won’t prosecute these crimes when they should.

quote:Might be because he and like 10 of his posse losers threatened a security guard (because his mommy told him to) with gun exposed. And punched a 17 year old playing basketball and then went to get a gun. And his loser friends threatened and put sights on Pacer players. And broke NBA rules (technically the CBA) by travelling with a gun and pulling it out in public for no reason

JJ is so comically desperate for cred that he’s lost track that he’s alone in this

Sure he does. I don't agree with his condescending tone in which he's stating it but he does have a point. Morant didn't break any laws(that we are aware of). I can't justify being a gun proponent then demand punishment for a guy legally possessing one. Stupidity alone isn't criminal. As long as Morant doesn't break laws while in possession of a gun then why should he be suspended? There was a time when your politics were left at the door. We need to go back to that particularly in regards to the workplace.

The problem is the company that employs him does not want this to be the image of their brand. They have asked him to not do this 3-4-5 times now and he just keeps on. So it’s not a gun issue or a race issue or anything else. It’s insubordination. If he keeps going against what his employer requests, you have to have major consequence to maintain respect.

I think you nailed all of the talking points here. You’ve been practicing.

Because one represents a private organization, while the other is defending the constitution that he swore to do.
quote:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic

Lol. JJ Redick clearly doesn't want to dig into the real culprits of the vast majority of mass shootings as well as the vast majority of all other gun violence in the USA.

No, I am just absolutely correct on this issue. Meanwhile you are cheerleading for mass murderers and giving them their soft targets. YOU are stupid or evil, or both. My guess stupid and evil.

Typical ESPN smooth brain take

apples and oranges.
Morant is an employee, and you have to follow the rules regardless if its not against the law or face the consequences. Redick is an idiot

Problem is that Ja has been accused of pulling a gun with a laser sight on Pacers employees.
Doing shite like that doesn’t show that he is learning his lesson.
