Regardless of what we know now, without them the game would’ve gone the way of horse racing, and I don’t think that’s hyperbole.

I was to at that stage as well. I went to a series at Wrigley that year in August in the heat of their home run battle. they were tied in homers at the point and in the game I went Mac hit two dingers and Sammy 1, it was nuts, the Cards won in extras that day.

When Sammy would run out and salute the right field bleacher fans to start the game it was electric.

I think things came out when Sammy parted ways with the Cubs that tarnished his legacy, beyond just the juicing. It seems the image he portrayed was not genuine and behind the scenes he was not really the person he seemed.

I can remember when he left, he left his boom box in the clubhouse, apparently a sore spot for his teammates who reportedly took baseball bats to it and destroyed it and celebrated.

Once so beloved by Cub fans but now you can scarcely illicit a mention of him in Wrigleyville.

I remember that Summer as a 10 year old... every time we played wiffle ball you had kids imitating each slugger’s swing (Griffey, McGwire, Sosa). Awesome memories. Team Griffey

I was, and always will remain, Team McGwire.

I remember staying up late to watch both guys play with my dad, including the 62nd. Also would wake up and rush to the sports section of The Advocate to check out the tally.

What an unbelievable summer.

Lived in Kansas at the time and was Team Sosa because everyone around me was team McGwire. This summer is the year I fell in love with the Cubs, would go over to my Grandma's house to watch their games on WGN because we didn't have cable.

It was fun to watch the whole summer play out in real time. Knowing what we know now takes away from it looking back on it, but in the moment was one of the greatest seasons in MLB history.

Interesting. I thought Ken Burns tenth inning did a good job on this + Bonds.

Legitimately some of the worst sports fans.

Also the reason baseball will die off one day.

I was a big McGwire fan (Cardinals fan). I remember skipping class in college the day he tied Maris.
