you have me backwards, not one personality leaving, shite even all of them would damage espn.

they make the personalities and pretty much anyone could do the jobs of SAS, cowherd, etc.

what I mean to say is that Simmons is one of the few whose career isn't dependent upon ESPN, their support and platform

Part of that is there just isn't a whole lot of other avenues to go. Rome is a radio guy, simmons is a journalist and so they don't NEED TV.

SVP needs TV, cowherd's radio show would get trounced in a competitive market without the espn platform. Mike and Mike wouldn't even be on the radio anywhere else. ESPN doesn't ask them to do too much. Seriously, we could put peej on morning radio with ESPN and he'd draw numbers

i dont think he was directly challenging management. it was more like a joke between two guys having a conversation and Simmons started talking big and lost himself in the moment. Simmons, Jacoby and Rose all joke about "dont get fired moments" on the podcasts so they are usually aware of the boundaries. Simmons just went too far this time for ESPN management's viewpoint.

And you know why this is? It is not because of the product ESPN puts out like you are trying to frame it.

But your hatred of ESPN and Goodell is entertaining.

As for the OP. He deserved to get suspended. He went on a profanity laced tirade in public called out his employer and was basically an idiot. No employer would allow anyone to do such a thing. I find it very hypocritical of people saying that he should be allowed to stay, yet soon as a coach does something they want his butt suspended. He represented a brand he made a choice and now he is dealing with repercussions of his choice.

Basically no different than you getting caught cussing in class, except a bigger scale.

yes but he is also paid a lot of money to give his opinion

so if simmons wants to make a big deal out of this and find a way to break his contract and leave, the justification will be that he is paid to give his opinion only IF it is in line with company policy.

When you reach a certain status you can give your opinion and not have to stay in line with a company policy. Simmons is at or very close to that status.

Dan Patrick is a perfect example of someone that got big enough to go his own way and benefitted from it.

Personally i would prefer the BS Report to be away from ESPN. I think it would be much better without the influence of ESPN brass. Grantland I am sort of indifferent to, because it is so broad now i don't think Simmons being there or not makes any difference. The NBA pregame show I dont watch.

ESPN has suspended Grantland editor-in-chief Bill Simmons for three weeks after he repeatedly called NFL commissioner Roger Goodell a liar during a profane tirade on a podcast.

The network announced the suspension Wednesday.

"Every employee must be accountable to ESPN and those engaged in our editorial operations must also operate within ESPN's journalistic standards," ESPN said in a statement. "Bill Simmons did not meet those obligations in a recent podcast, and as a result we have suspended him for three weeks."

Simmons' podcast was released Tuesday. He called Goodell a liar about not knowing what was on a security video that showed former Ravens running back Ray Rice hitting his wife in an Atlantic City elevator. Simmons also challenged management about his right to call Goodell a "liar" on the podcast.

Simmons is the editor of the sports website "Grantland," which is owned by ESPN. He also appears on ESPN's NBA studio shows.

I don't hate espn at all. I just think it's boring schlock. Sportscenter and NFL primetime were great but that's about all I used to watch

Yeah, but you have to know where your bread is buttered. I think most of us have the common sense not to disrespect our employers. They have egos too.

Dan Patrick & Rich Isen (?) got in a discussion this morning about their old times at ESPN & the question was posed if either had been suspended. Both said that they had not, but both said that they had complained about the over involvment of the suits at the "Mothership" in their day to day shows. The suits would go on rants in post production meetings over something as minor as how one segment closed & the hook to the next segment was not done to their specifications. To the extent they were given examples of how to actually accent certain words leading in to the next segment. Too, Eisen said that he got really tired of always being told by the suits, as the end of any furher discussion/s, "the bottom line is all we are interested in".Both supported Simmons but both said that the suits never lose.

I tell you, if I were Simmons, I would have to be physically restrained by my family and agent from cracking open a bottle of whiskey, cranking up some Motorhead and going on an epic Twitter/Facebook tirade.

I wouldn't be shocked if Simmons dialed up his lawyer to explore his options but I would guess ESPN has pretty ironclad contracts that, at least in his case, state that his "independence" is just some PR swill for the public and that he can be suspended for doing dumb things, like publicly challenging his bosses.

Those guys got a grad level degree in dealing with prickly personalities with Olbermann. Simmons isn't showing them anything new.

it's television, there is a balance to be struck.

The NFL just blows my mind because no one in that league seems to know how to do something other than play the PR game. What does Dan Snyder know about football? Great businessman, probably I don't know. I assume he's a billionaire for a reason. I think Zamoro? or whoever made an excellent point. these guys have started running the NFL like it's an atypical corporation. None of these owners seem to understand the appeal of their own product...football. There is no Lamar Hunt, al davis, GSH, etc. They run the NFL like they're selling laundry detergent.

I know that this may be an unpopular opinion but you have to admit that it's kind of funny that Simmons threatened to go public with the name of any suit that tried to quiet him and the suits just said "Nah, don't worry about it, Bill...we'll go public instead!" and then publicly suspended him.

If nothing else, Simmons got a lesson in how the game is really played and that might serve him well in the future.

Rich Isen

it's so funny to me that everyone thought DP was this big talent who would flourish beyond what he annoyingly refers to as "the mothership" I mean he has done well because he makes what butters would call "serious motherfricking money", but his access and exposure is seemingly less than rich eisen (oh who is now on cbs on Thursdays)

Rich Eisen has been one of the few people to really flourish, granted he was given the keys to an NFL run network, but it was still small with really no interesting programs like their timekillers "top 10 et al" and their shows that are really good "a football life" An rich eisen really didn't get the exposure dan Patrick received at ESPN. He'd be another afterthought non promoted "talent" at ESPN, now he has really been exposed to the public at large and even better, he's now going to be on network tv on Thursday evenings.
