No, but in a society that values free speech and freedom of the press, editorial journalists should be given the latitude to express their opinions without fear of reprisal.

Beyond that - the hypocrisy of this is shameful. I'm sick of companies hiring someone on the pretext that they will provide controversial opinions and then suspend that same person for the opinions they have been encouraged to divulge.

My word, this term needs to press rape charges against this board.

Of course, he could always go nuclear and prove me wrong but I'm guessing that his seven figure salary and personal sports journalism website that he was gifted will help him see the light and simply resort to a few passive aggressive digs at his bosses once he returns.

It would restore my faith in mankind to see Simmons "go public" even if it means he loses his job at ESPN. If it means that much to you, do it pal. That would be inspiring.

I suspect, as always, that money will win out. When given the choice Simmons will choose money over his principles, or whatever he says his principles are. He's a fraud.

Save it. Not a free speech issue. His civil rights were not broken. Geez - use it correctly.

He said something that his bosses didn't like - AND TAUNTED THEM ABOUT IT. They gave him three weeks for it. Maybe he is hired for his opinions and you disagree with ESPN's decision (like most here seem to do), but to mock the people who pay your salary? Kinda stupid. He is lucky he didn't get canned.

This is why I quit listening to sports talk radio / opinion shows - they are all full of loudmouths, trying to outdo each other for the almighty ad. dollar.

Haha. All the respect in the world to Simmons on this issue, I don't really care a whole lot about his work but he is spot on about Goodell

What's hilarious about this to me is Bill Simmons got suspended for essentially saying what ESPN's own reporting confirmed about Goodell and the NFL knowing.

Also, as I get my tin foil on, sometimes I wonder if these things are staged. ESPN impresses the NFL by suspending Simmons. Simmons gets three weeks off right before the NBA season starts. ESPN's consistently made itself the story in controversies like these.

Anyone who is upset about Simmons suspension, did you actually see what he said? He deserved it IMO, no matter how right he was about Goodell.

I would respect him a lot if he spent 3 weeks documenting everything he has and released it on the date he returns to work.

What's their journalistic standard?

Sucking corporate partner cock? NFL = ESPN.

I'm fairly new to bill Simmons but he certainly isn't a loudmouth espn type personality

Listen to the clip. They went off on a tangent for about 2 minutes and it was pretty light in tone and not the tirade people say it is. potty language...oh noooz

I hope so bad he pulls a Jerry Maguire and tries to take Grantland and its writers solo. It was the only thing worth reading on ESPN.com. His "rant" was hardly illogical and is probably the truth.

This was a win win for Simmons regardless of the outcome. He either wins a stare off with his bosses or gets suspended and people rush to his support

From what I understand about him, he's a name because of himself not espn

Espn pays him a shite ton of money which indicates there are other equally interested parties

Basically if you work in major sports media...you can't challenge anyone that fills the coffers.

It's not legal slander on his podcast...it's just his damn opinion...as he said it was...he didn't state it as fact to the world...it was his personal opinion.

Goodell is a liar. I think he is a liar as Simmons said.

You can't have opinions anymore in major media.

It's just the NFL and Peter King and back slapping.
