definitely shows you how the state of college athletics is broken
he was set up to be one of the top college coaches going forward

I guess he reasons that if the NBA doesn't work out he can always return to college and maybe things will be better at some point

I think it's a similar reason Vitello said, F it, I'll give MLB a try
The worst case scenario is it doesn't work out and I can pick my next college job

I don’t doubt he may try the NFL again at some point but he has had a taste of it and Saban is a mentor of his that obviously would advise against it

Still he’s young and has an ego, wouldnt be shocked at all if he wanted to give it another go after he conquers this mountain. I’m ok with that. I’d rather have a coach people want than the alternative

he's not that young anymore. There are only 8 NFL coaches older than he is (51)

It was pretty well known in Oxford he put his name out there for the Dolphins and Saints jobs.

Yeah Lane really wanted that dolphins job - probably more than any other job opportunity he's ever had.

I have no idea if an NFL team will ever be interested in him given how he operates / general public opinion of him, but if he's successful at LSU I suspect some NFL team will give him a shot and he'll jump on it.

Windhorst was on ESPN earlier saying Dallas tried “multiple times” to get Jon Scheyer to leave Duke to coach Cooper Flagg again but he passed every time. So it sounds like May was the backup choice.

One of his interviews after the NC provided some insight into what he was feeling and, as it turns out, was a prelude to this move...

quote:

"When I did the interview with (Dan) Hurley before the game and (Adam Zucker) asked what it's like to hoist that trophy, he said, 'You've been to the Final Four, it's a thousand times better than that,'" May told CBS Sports. "And I don't know if it's just me, but I'd heard where you climb the ladder and you say, 'Is this really it?' And it was worse. It was less than 'it.' The journey was so much better than the destination. The finality of it all is almost disappointing because you have one of the most special groups of humans you'll ever be around, and at that moment, it all ends."

As the cheers, hugs and media crunch continued in the bowels of Lucas Oil Stadium after midnight, agents wasted little time texting Michigan's staff, trying to set up negotiations for players entering the portal. It's a problem quite literally every coaching staff in the country would have opted into. At the same time, how absurd is it that Michigan had a planned 2 a.m. Zoom call with a high-end transfer the night it won the NCAA title?

The team landed in Detroit early on Tuesday afternoon. May's wife asked if he was going to come home and enjoy the afterglow, even for one night.

"I looked at her … and said no," May said.

"Literally, it's such a blur because there's no time to celebrate," May said. "You meet with your seniors, you do exit meetings, you're meeting with your players and trying to figure out what your vision with them will be for the following year. Plugging holes in your roster, trying to make sure you're generating NIL opportunities and attracting businesses and things of that nature."

Mike Brown and the Knicks are going to celebrate the NBA championship for a few months. They will get to take a break from the season. Winning the championship in college is almost a blessing and a curse because it puts you behind in the necessary recruiting for the next season. There is just as little job security now in college as there is in the NBA, NFL, etc.

Be interesting to see what recruits/transfers request a release now.

This may be an unpopular opinion on here but if an NFL team makes a hard run at Kiffin he is gone

I don’t see why anyone would coach college over professional sports at this rate.

College has all the negatives of pro ball, but with the added bullshite of recruiting and managing boosters.

For sure.

I think he'll be at LSU like 3-5 years and he'll be selective in choosing an NFL gig for his next job. He won't jump to a shitty organization though.

NFL loves young offensive minds these days.

If I’m Michigan, I’d 100% ask Beilein to come back as interim for a year. It’s going to be tough to find a permanent replacement in June.

Damn

I called him young in my post as well. I guess he's older than he acts/looks and the NFL has gotten younger and younger coaches.

See 2025 Omaha teams performance this year. NIL and portal, combined, have ruined college sports.

NIL + the transfer rules have effectively made pro jobs a better quality of life. The HC doesn't constantly have to fundraise and recruit his current roster along with new players, given them very little offseason

Hell, now you have to compete against other teams within your own school's athletic department to fight over who gets what percent of the revenue share money for your roster.
