How do you see the AFC West playing out three years from now?

In the national title game, Indiana had 3rd and 6, 3rd and 8, 3rd an 10, and 3rd and 12, and you know what they elected to do each time? Each time they handed the ball off. If you have a first round talent, starting NFL QB on your team, you’re really not going to put the ball in his hands and trust him to make a play on any of those 3rd downs? I’m not saying that Mendoza is going to be awful, but there’s no way I’m taking him with the #1 overall pick. I know this is a very weak QB class, but If I’m drafting a QB, I’m more interested in guys that actually had to air the ball out in college and carry their team.

Shocked at the number of downvotes you're getting. Your concerns are spot on. I was shocked how little confidence Cignetti seemd to have in Mendoza in the NCG. To me its telling, just like, as you note, it was with McCarthy.

Lol. NeilRetard. I posted 3rd down stats from his entire season, CCG, and playoff run. You truly are retarded.

They threw the ball 27 times. They also didn’t run the ball particularly well and had trouble protecting, giving up 3 sacks and 6 TFL.

They played a great defense that held its own and forced them to punt 5x. NeilRetard is pretending like they lined up and called run plays all night on 3rd down, they did not.

3rd and 8 - incomplete pass
3rd and 15 - completed pass, tackled short, punt
3rd and 2 - rush for 1st down
3rd and 6 - pass interference, 1st down
3rd and 13 - pass, offsides.
3rd and 8 - run for 20 yards
3rd and Goal @ 1 - TD rush
3rd and 17 inside own 20, rush to concede punt, but facemask.
3rd and 9 - sack, punt
3rd and 3 - incomplete by drop (sarratt), punt
3rd and 12 - incomplete, punt

Their 2 final drives

Score 17-14, 11:28 remaining
3rd and 5 @ Miami 37 incomplete pass
4th and 5 - 19 yard completion
3rd and 4 - incomplete
4th and 4 - qb read option draw for TD

Score 24-21, 5:04 remaining
3rd and 4 - 14 yard completion
3rd and 7 - 19 yard completion
3rd and 5 - 1 yard run to set up a FG to go up 6 with 1:47 on the clock and force Miami to use their last timeout.

Massive roster overhauls for LV, LA, KC.

The broncos showed that with an elite defense, you can have a mediocre offense now that the Chiefs are no longer invincible.

Why not? Joe Montana did. If he gets in a West Coast system that doesn't require him to throw downfield he could be fine.

Great? That seems to be part of being on a great team.

What would we be saying about Troy Aikman if he was drafted by Cleveland, Cincinnati, or Arizona? How many great individual years did Aikman have with Dallas? If you’re the kind of person who evaluates a QB based on team performances, of course Aikman was great. But comparing him to Dan Marino?

If Dallas had waited a year to draft a QB, would Jeff George be in the Hall of Fame?

These attributes get overlooked to much in the NFL... Too much emphasis on measureables and athletic ability. Doesn't matter how athletic and talented you are if you have the wrong attidude, bad work ethic, and can't process the game.

These threads never backfire…

Hell, NFL scouts even frick it up.

Drew Brees was too short and didn’t have a big arm. Anthony Richardson is gonna be a stud. Apparently the greatest QB of all time wasn’t worthy of being picked until 199. Ryan Leaf. Jamarcus Russell. I could go on. Granted, I’m sure our armchair scouts in here would have called all of those correctly.

Um, Peyton Manning was actually the first overall selection of his draft class..

Unique advantage - his teammates on the raiders will be about the same age as his IU teammates, maybe younger in some spots. So culture adjustment may not be too hard.

It all comes down to the team / coach that gets them. Most of these dudes go top 5 to crappy teams. They change head coaches 3 times and OC's 5 times in their first 5 years.

There is not success to be had there. If your a decent qb in college you'll make some good money. Then it's better to be a later round pick to a decent team. Learn the game, and when you get an opportunity go make some plays.

Most of the NFL has short tenured HCs.

Kevin O’Connell and Todd Bowles are top ten in team tenure and both were hired in 2022–one or both will be fired this year.

10 franchises have new HCs this year and 20 of the 32 teams have coaches who entering years 1, 2, or 3 with their teams.

He needs to go to a team where he is not expected to be THE MAN from the get go, because he will not be. I wonder, who is backing up Stafford, because I think that McVey could make him into a very good QB in 3 years.

Interesting comparison. Time will only tell is Kirk Cousins gets Kirk Cousined again in Vegas like he did in Atlanta.

If you’re drafting a QB this year and Mendoza is on the board you’re drafting Mendoza.

But it was a war of attrition as the pre-2025 season QB draft board just all shot themselves in the foot throughout the course of the CFB season. In that regard I think Mendoza feels more like a “last man standing” than elite prospect.

In a world where Manning, Simpson, Nussmeier, etc…all play like top 10-15 picks and Mendoza stands out among that group we may feel better about 1OA.
