People get all annoyed at my take but it’s true and I say it every year
The “hello friends” and the fake inserted in bird noises.. the bushes that bloom only this week.. the sand they bring in and the spray painting of any dead spots .. it’s all Instagram in real life. Perfectly curated and filtered to make it look like perfection for tv for this week
The concession prices that people fawn over .. thank god the brisket is only $2 my hotel room was $1100 a night and I spent $600 at the merch shops what a steal !!!!

I don’t get excited about ANYTHING the way I did 20 years ago.

I get what you are saying. Like everything else social media has caused Masters love to be very cringe at times
I see a ton of men and women that couldn’t tell you what Par means going on and on about “Masters week”

The Masters is a cultural thing here for sure (Atlanta), so in a way yeah. We host Masters parties most years. People have Masters flags out, etc. and it doesn't feel forced/fake because most of us go with some regularity.
But like a lot of others I rarely get as excited for any sporting even as I did 10-20 years ago. Part of that is the nature of this era of sports, part of it is just being older and not really having the time and enthusiasm to pour into that stuff. Not necessarily a bad thing, just different.

The PGA's glory days are long gone. That being said, if it is a close race on Sunday afternoon I will watch.

The Masters has a huge advantage over every other major in that it's played on the same course every year. We know the history and traditions because there's continuity. No one remembers where the '95 PGA or '02 US Open was; much less, individual holes. We remember Jack's birdie putt on #16 in '75 with Weiskopf and Miller watching. Or Tiger's heroics on the same hole. We know what the fairway bunker on #18 means because that's where Sandy Lyle saved his green jacket. Bubba's miracle on #10* is just another in a series of triumphs and tragedies on that hole. Other majors - unless the Open is at St Andrews - just don't stand out in the public consciousness.
And, yes, Augusta National adds to its own charm and mystique with their largely unyielding stance to convention or the media. When every other sport is subverted/changed/degraded by the networks that cover them, the ANGC refuses. They dictate what sponsors they will accept. They tell CBS how many minutes of commercials per hour are aired.
So, yeah, I love the Masters and all it stands for.
*If you've ever been to the course in person you'll agree; there's no way any human could bend a shot as short as that as much as he did off the surface he hit it. Unpossible.

I don't have near the passion for any sport that I had 20 years ago
I'm in my mid 40's and have played/watched sports my whole life.
Last year for the Super Bowl I was on vacation in Paris and didn't see a snap of the game. This year for the Masters I will be in Spain and won't see a minute of it. 20 years ago I couldn't imagine missing either one of those events, but that's how life goes. I will watch big events if I can, but they are no longer appointment viewing.

Yes. The Master's is great

Yeah, I guess this is typical with age maybe, but golf is the only sport where my interest has increased. College basketball too maybe but that's only because was so bad for so long and is competitive now but even back then always loved the tourney.

You're not necessarily wrong. The Masters has always insisted on itself, even though it's the kid brother of golf's majors. I guess you can thank Cliff Roberts for that.
That's not a bad thing though. It's hard not to revere something that guards its image, history, and traditions so fiercely, even if some of it feels forced. Like the Kentucky Derby, people enjoy the pomp and circumstance of it all, whether they care about golf or not.

As we get older and have more responsibilities, prioritization becomes a real thing.
I still love sports and my calendar is still filled with dates for travel to sporting events - but as you say certain things that used to be appointment viewing just are not anymore and I spend less than half the hours in a year watching sports than I did 20 years ago and I'm o.k. with that.

The place is amazing and seems to grow in it's lore. I love watching the tournament even more after having been as a patron. It has that Tiger Stadium "ghost within the walls" kind of feeling where you know exactly where certain moments occurred on certain holes over the years. I love the course more every April.
From a participant standpoint, I think golf is still trying to figure itself out post TW/Phil prime and after the LIV/PGA split. It just lacks the energy when Big Cat is in contention.
I'll be pulling for Angel Cabrera to do something crazy this week.

Yep

Yep.
If you can't get excited for The Masters then you don't like golf.

But the people who view Augusta as Heaven and wax on on and philosophically of how beautiful and special it is .. I roll my eyes It’s a golf tournament in the end. It’s made to look pristine . Why anyone’s shocked at this I’ll never know
This is actually a good take but you took it too far in the subsequent posts.
It’s a beautiful golf course and a great event. I’ve been a few times and would love to go back. But people fawn over it like it’s some sacred hallowed ground, like the air is different there. At the end of the day it is a golf tournament at an extremely well maintained golf course. There are tons of those out there. However, as another poster pointed out, other big tournaments (sans the players) aren’t held at the same course each year, so people don’t treat them the same way. Or at least they don’t have the opportunity to obsess over them in the same way.
