The rules of the CFP only say the top 4 conf. champions get a bye. It doesn't say all 4 have to be from the P4 conferences.
Is this true? I’m not calling you out, just asking.

7 Boise State would have been the closest off the top of my head, maybe 17 UCF. Some things have to go very right and you need the right personnel, including some crazy gifted QB that can pull a feather out of their arse. JFF wasn’t super highly recruited and could have ended up at one of those kinds of schools.
2004 Utah could as well

It’s harder now than it was back in the BCS era or the 4 year CFP. Now they’d likely have to win 3 games in a row vs top 8 schools. 4 if they don’t get the round 1 bye.

The 5th highest ranked conference champ is guaranteed a spot in the 12 team field, but no guarantee on their seeding. They could be a 5 seed and get a home game in the 1st round or could be seeded 12 and have to go on the road

Honestly, Fickell’s team at Cincinnati that made the playoffs a few years ago is probably the closest a G5 will get to a national championship for the foreseeable future. That team had like 9-10 guys get drafted that year. They just ran into one of the only two teams that they couldn’t hang with in the Semis

Once some of the wealthier alumni of G5 teams realize they do have a chance, if they fund it....we could see one slip through.

But it’s easier now that they’re guaranteed one of the 12 spots in the tournament. They can then tell kids we have a chance to play for a title and there’s no way to keep us out if we deserve it

Yes, when G5 has it’s own playoff

But that wouldn’t be THE college football playoff

Then, let's say the 5th seed gets upset by the 12th seed. That 12th seed would move up to play Boise.
My initial reaction to that is that our current conventional wisdom is that the number 5 seed will arguably be the 3rd best (or possibly 2nd) team in the country.
Of course, the more I look at how the playoff committee is handling the rankings, maybe you’re on to something if -
Boise gets the number 4 seed and Penn State somehow winds up as the 5 seed, rather than Ohio State. I mean, for that matter Notre Dame could be the 5th seed too, and lost to Northern Illinois.

Just pigging backing into this thread - is there any chance that two G5 teams make the playoffs? Say ASU slips up, could Tulane get in ahead of the Big 12 champion, say BYU?

Any g5 have a slew of billionaire alumni?
They're perfect for the NIL era. Their alumni already have the playbook for it, and they don't even have to hide and pretend they're not paying anymore. I honestly think they expect to win within the decade... which is why they agreed to joining the ACC without getting TV revenue for a few years. They just needed to get more exposure and a better schedule, to get serious playoff consideration.

In the free transfer era, the P4 programs will always pick off enough of the G5 rosters to prevent a championship-caliber team from forming
Outbidding everyone else to buy championship-caliber personnel from scratch isn't even an option because you'll never end up with a team, just mercenaries

Not to mention that they can’t even afford that, and starting behind means they’ll have to overpay for talent
Guys that will go to the SEC for a million will require 2 or 3 mil to consider anyone in a G5 conference

As much as I dislike the new era of college football, having a G5 champion would be an awesome story. Will it happen?
