I just hope the new ownership wouldn't be woke. Get back to the core business of live sports and highlights and get away from opinion shows and human interest topics.
There is no business in sports highlights
That’s easily accessible on your phone for free.
A real driving factor in profitability and ratings is online hits.. whether that be Youtube, Twitter, Facebook.. hits are important. And the dumb arse debate shows (scripted debate shows, FWIW) draw clips.
How often do you see threads on the MSB about a terrible take Stephan A Smith drops on ESPN? Their model is, the viewing public won’t watch ESPN, so we are going to drop a take that will get the viewing public to watch a 2 minute clip of it

What would happen to the interaction between ABC and ESPN?
Years ago, ABC outsourced their entire sports division to ESPN. Would ABC restart a sports division?

I've felt Disney needed to do this for years. Disney's business business model involves control over their own originated or purchased content. The content has to be completely controlled and predictable so that they can ring every last penny of value out of their creative property.
Live content is an entirely different animal and goes against their model. I believe that is why you have seen ESPN become so flooded with senseless opinion shows over the last decade. Disney can control what pundits say and do. They cannot control the outcome of live sports or the actions of athletes off the field (supposedly).
I think this would be a great move for Disney, their investors, sports fans, and those of us that grew up loving ESPN the way it used to be. Sports-focused and almost devoid of opinion shows.
Disney has been over-paying for rights to live sports broadcasts for years. Spin-off ESPN and get back to what they do best, having absolute control over original or pre-packaged content.

I mean who can even afford it? It's got to be a pretty small handful of companies who can afford both the initial purchase price as well as take on the long term commitments of those tv contracts.
1) Amazon
2) Private equity firm that will load it up full of debt and cut dead weight.

Amazon. I read somewhere recently they might be interested, them and someone else but I don't remember who the other was
Amazon has really tapped into India’s market by creating Bollywood stuff and showing cricket.
They also show premier league games in the uk.
Amazon could absolutely get into the American sports market.

Amazon already is. They stream Thursday Night Football games on Prime Video. Among other things.
If they bought ESPN you can bet your arse they would use that as a way to drive Prime Subscriptions up even more.

Yeah, frick that.
ESPN held Cable companies hostage for years...who passed it on to the subscribers.
"I just want basic Cable..and one more channel, ESPN for football.". Nope if you want ESPN, you have to pay for gardening and Honey Boo-Boo shows and other shite you'll never watch for $80 extra.

Uh, what.
Your two statements contradict each other.
It means that ESPN content would almost certainly be made available on Prime Streaming (likely for an extra per month add-on).

ESPN is a sinking ship unless they can get out of some of their deals with the NBA etc
This. They overpaid for just about every deal they have and some of them there were no other suitors they bid against themselves and paid too much. Good riddance.

Disney ruined ESPN and is now dumping the carcass. This is what fascist lefty’s do with everything they touch.

Now part of AT&T and my understanding is they're trying to dump CNN but not sure about other Turner properties...which are more profitable BTW

The laughably bad contract they agreed to for NBA TV rights has led to a lot of their problems today.

As much as you might hate ESPN,who do you think is helping to subsidize all those coaches salaries, stadium improvements and all those athletic facility upgrades at your favorite SEC or BIG school?
BTW,not a fan either but their money has made a big impact on CFB.

It's funny to me that I posted this on the MONEY board and no one replied and I got 1 downvote.
Went to the wrong place I guess.
