Dillingham made exiting ASU players go back and shake hands. He explains why.

After the loss, a few ASU players started heading back to the locker room. Dillingham got them and made them go back onto the field. A reporter asked him why that was so important.

I like him as a coach. ASU was a lot of fun to watch and I hope they keep building on the success they had this year

That's awesome. Kudos to his team for a great fight in the 2nd half.

He’s got a target on his back now.

Making those players go back is discipline. THAT is what made iconic coaches of the past. This dude is building something special. It's really nice to see a dose of old school in today's game

He should have made them kick a field goal in the first half and he’d have won that game.
Never understand why coaches don’t take the points in the first half.

They've got something like 30+ from the 2 deep coming back. I hope they get some good portal talent too. They'll need help at OL, DL and WR to make the next jump.
I just don't know if they have the NIL. If this was 5 or 6 years ago, I can't imagine them not finding a lot of high end recruits that really want to be a part of what they're doing there. They were smaller and slower, but there's a lot of dog in that team.
No DL over 300. Held Texas to like 60 yards rushing. Only Georgia did that.

He only half-joked about holding student tryouts for a kicker during the season. Kicking situation is bad and dictates some of their calls.
They went and got a guy in the portal though.

I’ve honestly wondered why ASU hasn’t had more historical success. The campus and Tempe is amazing, weather is overall better than the Deep South (110 for weeks with 0 humidity isn’t any worse than 95 with 95% humidity), Arizona has a growing population, easy to get to. The airport is next to campus with massive amounts of direct flights from every major city.
Dillingham has done a great job, and I can see them being a major player with NIL.

And they put Mrs America on Redshirt. I told my son that's where he should go..... he didn't.

That's the kind of principled thing the reflective players will internalize for life

A series of unfortunate coaching hires. Guys that don't really get the job or do what it takes to win.
Dirk Koetter was a phenomenal offensive mind, but he wanted to be in the NFL. He fricking hated recruiting. He got what he wanted, albeit after being fired.
Dennis Erickson was there for one last hurrah and a pay check. Had the credentials obviously, but the program ran wild. It was just athletes vaguely following the advice of coaches who were indifferent.
Todd Graham almost figured it out, but he had two major issues- Kind of a weird, telemarkety dude. Folks don't really like him. Great eye for coaching talent. His coaching tree is outstanding. Two, he couldn't get over that he's a Texas HS coach first. He didn't put much priority on recruiting SoCal and you have to do that to win at ASU. It's right next door. He wanted to recruit Texas, and be the 3rd or 4th or 5th guy in line. Then all of a sudden there wasn't a Will Sutton on his defensive line anymore.
Herm and Antonio Pierce brought in a ton of talent, but Herm wanted to coach like it was the NFL. They should have brought in an OC who would let their talent blow the doors off people, but they were happy with slow, grindy games. Ton of guys who were good players, but they were shackled.
Dillingham is the first guy in a long time that really gets what ASU is. He's from there. He knows the DNA of the school. They've done a great job finding talent that isn't just obvious 4 and 5 star guys. They really look for guys in the portal who have multiple years of eligibility left like they're supplementing their high school recruiting more than filling holes. Their big jump is when they can get in a higher end DL and OL. And they play like fricking dogs, man. That team plays hard and it wasn't just the Texas game.

Historically, schools did more regional recruiting. Arizona wasn't exactly a hotbed for talent, and UCLA and USC were taking the top tier guys from SoCal. Recruiting nationally has slowly become easier, with technology and a flight keep people close to home, so to speak. As that has happened though, ASU hasn't capitalized because of coaching.
Aside from being hot, Arizona is a great place and the "scenery" in Tempe is top notch. It's a huge school, which means there is going to be tons of alums, and probably money to follow. They could be primed for a run of success not seen in decades for that program.

Me too. What he has done for that program in year 2 has been remarkable. This program just got punished by the NCAA for Herm’s shite.
