I don’t think it is any worse than Who Dat. We have just grown up around that portmanteau version instead of they.

Who are they saying they are going to beat the Bengals?

v.

Who is it that is saying they are going to beat the Saints?

Neither sounds so much better as the other that one should be classified as “retarded”.

To the OP, who dat is from the 1800s, so it definitely came first. Who Dey was adopted by Cincinnati Bengals in 1982. Who Dat was officially adopted by Saints in 1983, but used way before that, going back even to high schools in the area by the 60s.

NEW ORLEANS — In New Orleans -- there’s a chant no good Saints fan could ever forget. The origin of the term “Who Dat” can be traced back more than 160 years. In athletics, the chant was used at Southern University in 1960s and later at St. Augustine High School

my father has Tulane memorabilia from the 70s that has Who Dat on it

'Who Dey?' origins
The most-popular origin story involves a Cincinnati beer from the Hudepohl Brewing Company. For what it's worth, those commercials from the 1980s are fantastic:

Beer vendors at the old Riverfront Stadium would shout "Hudy!" to sell to fans, and that made a natural transition to "Who Dey?" in the stands.
Hudepohl Beers released limited edition "Hu-Dey" beer cans last week.

The Saints are older than the Bengals. Saints started in 1967, and the Bengals in 1968. Bengals started Who Dey during their first Super Bowl season in 1981. Who dat was popular in Louisiana and Mississippi colleges and high schools going back to the 60's. The Saints started using the cheer in 1983.

Same with Death Valley between LSU and Clemson.
