I yawn at farm system rankings now. That said, the Astros need their top prospects to at least become useful big leaguers to not have to take a big step back.

If 2 of Melton/Matthews/Dezenzo become at least average every day players, that would help keep the window open longer.

Yeah, that would have been part of the given terms

Especially considering that Chas and Jake fall into this category.

I mean, those 2 sometimes play like average everyday players. Let's set the bar a bit higher for the newbies.

I wonder if we were just trying to drive the price up. I’m guessing a lot of that is incentives but that’s still a ton of money

Bizarre. He’s not good at 2B but I think he will be even worse in LF

What if we never intended to sign Bregman and used the rumors of coming back to the table as Public cover to dump Pressly and get under the luxury tax and now our off season is done.

Trade Tuck, dump Pressly, let Bregman walk. We've added Walker, Paredes, Wesneski to the pen and a prospect in Cam Smith. How much better or worse are we?

I think it’s more or less a push.

We can split hairs between Bregman and Paredes

Offensively:
Massive upgrade at 1B
Massive downgrade in the OF (or the IF if Altuve moves to left…there’ll be hole somewhere depending on where Paredes plays)

And I think they’re going to use Wesneski as a starter until Garcia comes back. Even then, they may go to a 6 man.

Framber
Brown
Spaghetti
Ron White
Wesneski

Unless I’m forgetting someone.

I think they are adding a veteran bat regardless.

However, the premise is sound. They know Bregman is fixated on not taking "a pay cut" so they offer him just a little less AAV than he made last year. The Astros have given Bregman what turned out to be his best offer, knowing he likely won't bite. Now, he's looking like an arrogant idiot for not taking it.

I think we are probably worse. We are essentially trading Bregman and Tucker for Paredes and Walker. I’d take Bregman over Paredes production wise next year, even if it’s a relatively small margin. And I liked signing Walker, but he’s not Tucker.

Of course Tucker only played half the year last season, so I can see us winning more games with some good luck health wise. But I don’t think we were particularly snakebit injury wise compared to other teams.

Just as likely their incompetence is a better explanation than whatever grand plan it might seem they had. Not sure this current management group thinks beyond the next move, which always seems to be reactionary.

I just ran across a Twitter graphic of active player with the most home runs vs each franchise. Started to read through it but I brought it here for guesses before I got to our destroyer.

Started to say Trout and it may well be based on longevity in the division but he's always been surprisingly under whelming against us. Ty France owns us but I think he's more average than home runs.

Marcus Semien? I bet he’s got the most ABs against us among active guys and I feel like he’s always done well against us

Or maybe just Trout

Racked my brain and gave up. It's Trout.

He's the leader vs all the other AL West teams. Although his struggles against us are apparent. He's got 42 up to 45 vs the others and 29 against us.

What is frustrating about the "No pay cut" mentality -- when Bregman signed his $100million extension in 2019, he was coming off of a 7.9 WAR, .286/.394/.532 31HR/103 RBI with 96 BB season. In 2019, he was even better and led the league in walks and produced an 8.9 WAR.

Since that 2019 season, his production has been a trend in the wrong direction. Last season he produced a 4.1WAR, walked only 44 times and had an OBP of .315 (his lowest since his rookie season - .313) and his OPS was the lowest of his career -- that is NOT $200MM worthy.

And with those trends, frick Your pay raise.

He was not a free agent or even close to it when he signed that extension

He also only had a 3 year trend working up vs the current 6 year downward trend.
