@TBrownYahoo
Wide net for Astros also includes Ray, among all the others you've heard. The stunner would be if 'Stros don't end up with one of the top-end available SPs.

@Ken_Rosenthal
Hearing same. Wheeler also possibility, and Bauer might be as well. Tim noted Bumgarner in earlier tweet. HOU on Bum’s no-trade list, but there is incentive for him to approve a deal. Player traded mid-season ineligible for qualifying offer, exempt from draft-pick compensation.

I think we’re shooting for something bigger with Wheeler as the fallback

What I think about when determining which pitcher I want is a guy like Jack Morris, a horse. I mean a guy that when the pressure is at its most, can perform.

Verlander is that guy, but before that, another one that comes to mind, pitching in WS with no rest, taking on all comers, is Bumgarner.

And he's LH, which would fit in nicely b/w JV and Cole. The biggest part of the equation isn't the stuff, as much as dealing with the pressure.

Ben Hogan was asked in the early 50's how many club pros across America did he think could beat him. He replied probably 100. The writer said, "Really?" Hogan then replied there's 100 that could beat me for a dollar, but there's not one who could beat me for $500.

@Feinsand
I'm told by a source it's still "doubtful" that the Giants trade Bumgarner, and are more likely to make an incremental addition or two rather than being sellers.

@martinonyc
Hearing Astros more on Bauer than Bumgarner

Hear similar, mainly that #Astros badly want to leave deadline with MadBum, Wheeler or Bauer. That is their primary target list.

I think what we're seeing is Luhnow swinging his big shlong around.

Simple facts are, he's got enough high-talent prospects to make any of these trades. But everyone is telling him, "we want Tucker (or Whitley)"

His response is to flood the media with reports that he's talking to everybody. Simple fact is, he's going to make a trade and give up some damn good prospects. Some team will benefit. He's letting everyone know it... he'll end up getting a player(s) of the caliber he wants without giving up any of the players he wants to keep. One of these teams will finally flinch first on the whitley/tucker demands.

Wahoocs makes a good point about Bum VS. Bauer. On paper Bauer is the better pitcher right now. Filthy stuff. I could care less about team chemistry, but his point about being able to handle elevated pressure is a huge deal. Something lunhow likely cares very little about because it's not in his spreadsheets.

This trade deadline is going to play out like a WWE show. We'll be hearing Noah Syndergaard's music just when you least expect it.
