Nov. 18: George Springer is one of the major reasons why the Astros have been a perennial contender since 2015, but his tenure in Houston could be over. Count MLB Network insider Jon Heyman among those who don’t think the Astros will re-sign the free-agent center fielder this offseason.
“I think he’s as good as gone,” Heyman said on this week’s episode of the Big Time Baseball podcast.
Houston reportedly has been eyeing free agent Jackie Bradley Jr. as Springer’s potential replacement in center, but the 30-year-old isn’t in Springer’s league offensively.
It’s possible the Astros could sign Bradley to play center and add a more offensive-minded player in left field, where they also have a vacancy, with Michael Brantley joining Springer on the free-agent market. While Brantley is an option to return, Houston may aim its sights a bit higher.
Per Heyman, the Astros have expressed interest in Ozuna, whose market reportedly runs at least 10 teams deep. What Houston will need to decide is whether it is comfortable playing Ozuna in the field, as Yordan Alvarez is likely to enter 2021 as the team’s regular designated hitter after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on both knees in August.

He’s likely going to get a pretty big deal after how well he has played the last 2 seasons

I would be pretty happy with a Brantley Bradley combo. I think Bradley/Ozuna is gonna cost too much but would obviously like that too
I’m guessing Bradley gets something like 2/20, Brantley 2/25, Ozuna 4/64

Those numbers sound right, but Brantley’s worth to me is far greater than 25 for 2 years of his bat
Especially when you consider we paid more than that for the last 2 years of Reddick

I really don't think the cash drawer is going to be opened too much this off season. That's why I mentioned Bradley and Markakis. In the next couple years, particularly after the 2021 season, we're going to hit a bit of a financial reset with a lot of big money coming of the books. Basically leaving us with Altuve and Bregman for 3 more years.
I think after this season, if teams can start to recover from covid losses, we'll see some bigger moves. But this off season is going to be about plugging holes at reasonable prices.

I'll say this about the Ozuna interest. There's something to be said about needed another power bat to replace Springer's pop in the lineup.
Yed will hit a bunch of bombs. Correa and Tucker could be big home run guys with how hard the hit the ball but it doesn't always or consistently translate into homers.
If the juiced ball doesn't return, Bregman and Altuve will probably never approach their past power seasons.
In fact, Bregman may be the best fit to replace George as the leadoff guy. Get on base for the more likely big bats by being the complete and patient hitter he was born to be.

Yes, this is true about the needed power Ozuna could provide.
And I also was wondering about leadoff, and Bregman was the first to come to mind
As far as Ozuna, I really just don't know what the market is for him vs what it would take to re-sign Springer

It’s interesting and somewhat unfair that MLB hasn’t decided on the permanent DH. If they were to put it in place for sure next year it would help the market for both Ozuna and Brantley quite a bit I would think
You may see both those guys wait until it’s decided for certain

DH only guys don't hold a lot of value unless they are elite hitters. Alvarez appears to be one of the few that may be able to do it but you better hit 45 or 50 bombs a year and get on base .450 or above or else you drastically limit roster flexibility.
Alvarez needs to be working on learning 1b the next 2 years so he can replace yuli.

With Cano out and opening up $20mil for the Mets to play with, I won’t be surprised to see them sign Springer, Brantley and Lemahieu. Owner is rich enough, he could sign them all on the same day just for fun.

That's been done a whopping 5 times over the last decade, not counting 2020's asterisk of a shortened season.
Mike Trout in 2018 (.460)
Joey Votton in 2017 (.454)
Bryce Harper in 2015 (.460)
Joey Votto in 2015 (.459)
Joey Votto in 2012 (.474)

The Cano suspension has to be the most convenient one I've ever seen

Astros Radio Network lists WUBR 910AM as an affiliate, but I don't believe this to be the case anymore because anytime I ask someone still living in BR to confirm this, they say the station is playing programs in Spanish.
Do you believe WJBO would ever become an Astros Radio Network affiliate? WJBO used to be the flagship station of the LSU Sports Network.
If not WJBO, what about Talk Radio's WBRP-FM 107-3? WBRP used to be the flagship station for the Baton Rouge Kingfish (Flagship, sure, but there was only one station that broadcasted the Kingfish).

I saw on Baseball America this morning that Sugarland is now going to be the Astros AAA affiliate. Has that been officially announced yet? That's pretty awesome to have the AAA team that close.
ETA: I just read back a few pages and saw it was already announced. Carry on.

I don't think he will ever be good enough to do that. It would be interesting to know just how bad his knees really are.

Yep. I checked a few different times last season. Wound up paying for the app.

~Dbacks claimed Rogelio Armenteros off waivers
~Braves claim Jack Mayfield off waivers
~No official announcement but it appears Reid Ryan has left the organization. His bio on the team website is gone and he tweeted a thank you to Astros fans.

The Astros are adding five players to their 40-man roster, per a team announcement. Right-handers Forrest Whitley, Tyler Ivey, Jairo Solis and Peter Solomon were all selected, as was infielder Freudis Nova.
Protecting them from the Rule 5
Whitley and Nova are the big names but I’ve been an Ivey fan since he was at A&M and then transferred. I could see him surprising and fitting in a role similar to Javier

Brandon Bailey traded to Cincinnati for cash. With all the movement today, the 40c man roster is at 38.
