You don't need to sign anyone this year, but in 2019 you make a move for a Patrick Corbin, Garrett Richards, or Matt Harvey to keep some depth.

I would agree that Keuchel is definitely gone after 2018, and I am fine with that, but I do know he and Strom are very close, and should the Astros decide to sniff in the general direction of his best offer, I could definitely see him staying at a discount if the Astros offered.

Thats whhat I addressed in my first hypothetical post that got this discussion started:

quote:

I love LMJ, but if he cant pitch more than 100 IP per season then he needs to be dominating in the back of our pen. But out of pure potential he probably gets penciled in as the #5 over Morton if this happens to start. But if Morton gets the #5 and LMJ moves to our BP immediately, then we just upgraded tremendously in the pen too and in the rotation by signing another SP.

And it allows you to dump Jabroni for milb guys or whatever. Really it would probably just be a salary dump of $4mm per year or whatever he is at now.

FWIW, in no way do i think this happens and they sign another SP. My postings were more for the discussion on what could happen if the astros explored adding another of the free agent SPs this season.

We already dont have enough room in our rotation as it is.

Which leads to the next point...who is Luhnow trading Jabroni to get? I think McHugh is going to get dealt because he is not going to fit the role of the long reliever, even if it is highly likely he'd get a bunch of starts with how injury prone DK/LMJ/Morton are. Besides, he deserves to be a full-time starter somewhere.

What we don't know is if trading him will help restock the farm or get another big league piece (bullpen?).

Look at his numbers, even last year. Jabroni is far more valuable than a salary dump. He's a good, proven MLB starter.

I would guess big league piece, the farm is still pretty stocked. Only difference is they spent big a couple years ago in the international market, so a lot of that investment is still very low in the minors.

Wouldn’t be surprised at all to see some of those guys start taking steps forward over the next 2 years from a prospect ranking perspective.

McHugh could fit on a lot of teams who need backend help or someone to eat innings. Two years of control left and cheaper money wise than signing a guy like Cashner Chacin or Vargas, probably better too assuming good health

I think we’re still trying to find a better catching partner in than Stassi and there’s the LH reliever spot but I don’t see any other glaring needs at the ML level

McHugh could be a decent backend option for a good team and could also be someone a rebuilding team flips for prospects at the deadline. Orioles are a really good fit and have been mentioned with a lot of the more budget rotation type FAs (if we wanted to deal with them again). Twins are a team that should be good and needs rotation help in the worst way. Pretty much any of the rebuilding teams could use a guy who can eat innings (Tigers Reds A’s Phillies) but I doubt you’re going to get prospects from one of those clubs, would likely have to be a ML player

I just meant a trade for milb pieces - maybe even a guy or two who has solid MLB projections. I meant "salary dump" as in just getting his numbers off the mlb books this season to either reinvest or bank - whatever, in luhnow I trust. If they end up using his salary for other mlb pieces, like a catcher, then great.

and remember the context of every one of my posts today was with the hypothetical of us signing another SP. Nothing I said has anything to do with the actual current shape of our pitching staff.

You can't fool me. Once a Jabroni, always a Jabroni.

Anyone else still feel like he won’t make it to Houston this year unless there are some injuries?

I understand that he’s an elite prospect, but do they want to rush him? Especially when you have Martes and Armentores coming up in line as well.

I Don't think he comes up this year unless it's in the pen.

I think this FO has shown if you continue to perform at a high level they’re going to keep advancing you. If he keeps dominating they will bring him up even if it’s as a reliever. And there will be injuries to starters, both real ones and instances where they use the 10 day DL to rest guys

Absolutely no reason to rush Whitley.

They're hoping if he has a good 2018, then he will likely be called up at the beginning of 2019.

He should not be called up this year. They want to monitor his innings. We will be a playoff team. No need to get any significant time. I would be cool if they gave him a start in September, but he will probably have reached his innings limit by then. I’m more curious to see how they do in 19 with him. He will probably be called up around June in 2019, but with a hard innings limit. If they progress his innings like lmj he would only be allowed to throw 120-130 or so innings in 2019. Will be something to watch.

Although he is projected to be durable so....who knows how hard of an innings cap.
