Yeah I get that but I'd love to see us add another Left-Handed bat

And arm for that matter

Phillies helped Lidge stop tippin', and he helped them win a WS in 2008.

Jimmy Crane says Jeff and his crew are actively pursuing a high end starter which could also mean by trade. Nothing is close though.

Would rather just sign Darvish and keep our prospects. Cole isn't good enough to ship off Whitley or Tucker. You don't ship off a top 5 prospect for a guy who isn't a front line starter.

If we give up Whitley or Tucker in a deal for Cole I will be upset. I think Cole has a ton of upside still and believe in Strom, but I don’t want to give up one of them to find out and I feel like we would have to

Just because they are asking for Whitley or Tucker doesn't mean they would get them. Hell if a team isn't asking for them in a trade then that GM isn't doing his job correctly.

Edit: However, having Cole, Darvish, or Arrieta in the rotation to start next season would be pretty nice.

Pittsburgh can afford to be patient in dealing him though and there are several other teams interested

Yeah I just don’t think we have the pieces to make a trade that big without involving Tuck or Whitley

Has Whitley become #1 prospect in our farm for anyone else? I’m seeing some top 5 Cy young finishes in his future

Agreed, of course given the landscape of the current market and the makeup of the Astros team they can likewise be patient. Not a since of desperation to make a move in order to be competitive etc.

If Darvish or Arrieta start to linger out there and we think we can jump on one relatively cheap (not cheap overall but less than what everyone anticipated) I would rather go that route I think

I feel like Tucker could be a key part of us contending for a championship next year and Whitley is the only pitching prospect I have a lot of faith in right now

For me, yes. Prospects are such a crap shoot, particularly pitchers. But what Whitley did in his first full year of pro ball at 19 years old is extremely impressive. He's got a really good repertoire, the build of a work horse and could be in the majors by the time he's 21.

Case in point about a crapshoot, we were saying the same things about Martes at this point last year. Though I'm a lot higher on Whitley's potential than Frankie Tuesday.

Also, his agent is now Scott Boras. Cole is going big after this season.

Granted, that could play in the Astros favor this season as he seeks to display himself for a big contract.

I would trade Tucker before Whitley if forced to choose between the two

The DAT on 4th page? I don’t think so. Thank god for the Astros because college football will suck for the next 3 years, minimum.

How thick is this Cole smoke? Just don’t give up Whitley. It’s going to take Tucker to pull Cole and I think I’m ok with that. If they land Cole, I think the writing is on the wall regarding Kuechel

I think they get the deal done without giving up Whitley or Tucker.

Martes, Fisher, white and Kemp (as a second baseman)... maybe a high-ceiling/ high-risk young guy. Pirates need infield depth... they've got a zillion outfielders.

Only way Whitley or tucker is part of the deal is if they are a PTBNL and their inclusion is dependent on Cole performing at a certain level.
