It's crazy to think the Lakers missed out on a coach because he wanted to stay at UCONN. What a time to be alive

He could always return to college but if he’s happy where he’s at and wants to stay on the east coast that’s commendable. Now if the knicks or Celtics come calling and he still stays then he will never leave.

How will we survive on only $5M a year at UCONN?

More likely he didn't want to draft Lebron's bum-arse son and be the fall guy when they fail in the postseason because their roster is built so poorly

I wouldn't say that. He has built a tremendous program at UConn and is being paid very well. He also has much more job security at UConn.

That's why I thought he would go. Whether you like them or not, the Lakers are the premiere brand in the NBA and one of the most recognized brands in all of American sports (maybe only just behind the Yankees, if that). If he ever had any desire to coach in the NBA (and he's indicated he might) then there is no guarantee such an opportunity would be available to him in the future. He has set what could be an impossible standard to match at UConn. The thought being take a swing at the NBA now and if it doesn't work out there will be many colleges willing to throw big money at him. NBA failure wouldn't have any effect on his college demand.

There was really no "wrong" decision for him.

You could probably make a similar argument for Connecticut.

I wonder if he wanted 5 years for $100 million fully guaranteed to do it?

The roster is pretty good.

You have two All NBA players

I think the one hole is another big to play alongside Davis vs. Denver. Both Wood and Hayes were not the answer. Lakers match up well against every team in the West except Denver.

The Hurley talk stunk all along. Woj said he was the first choice from the beginning and the Lakers were relentless in their pursuit but in actuality they didn't talk to him until a month after the job came open. People kept talking about how it was going to be a huge offer but 70 over 6 yrs is less than Monty makes.

Maybe this wasn't so much a red herring before hiring Redick but more about trying to show that Jeannie and Pelinka didn't just settle on an assistant from the 8th seed or a podcaster/tv announcer even if that's exactly their intentions.

Yeah but he probably won't be able to return to UConn. Money isn't everything. Stability and security is a factor and going to the Lakers to deal with Lebron, Klutch, and Pelinka/Buss is about as unstable and uncertain of a future as you can ask for. If he and his family really like UConn, then he's smart to stay.

Financially he's going to be fine.

Also, everything I’ve read says the LAKERS job isn’t looked at nearly as desirable by ppl in the nba than regular folks.
Add a cash strapped ownership that doesn’t have a great recent track record.
You probably only have lebron for at most 2 more years and then only have street clothes as your star.
For Hurley, he made the right decision.
