Most HS coaches run the same 12-20 plays over and over and over.

This. As a former coach, (not HC) that’s coached in some 4A semi final games in MS, it’s all about window dressing and formations. Most kids take to learning formations easier than brand new play concepts. Most high schoolers just can’t learn that much otherwise they’ll frick it up. You don’t want your best athletes on the bench because they’re too fricking stupid to pay attention and learn. It’s still all about the athletes in most cases in high school. It’s better to stick to 20 bread and butter plays but just use them in 20 different formations.

Your 3-6 win teams will probably have a half dozen or so formations they run. The playoff contenders will probably have a dozen or so formations they use while the championship teams will formation your arse to death. One year, one team ran 22 different formations at us and we had to make sure our defense was gap sound against them all. That was a stressful Thanksgiving

You’re the HC. You have a full year to prepare. Could you finish .500? I think offensivly I could put points on the board. I’d struggle on defense.

I’d have a greater chance of being successful as the head coach than being a coordinator.

We’re fricked if I’m designing and coaching plays. I can manage people though. Give a few good pep talks. Make sure things are running correctly. Ask good questions. Let assistants do their thing.

Heck no, and I wouldn’t want to.

Now, those HoF travel ball and Xbox/playstation coaches on Tiger Droppings, that’s a whole different story. According to their own legend and opinions, they can coach anything from the confines of their couches whilst watching other games and make in game adjustments on the go.
Just ask them. They’ll tell you.

Depends on the class / district I was in. I'd need at least 1 competent coach. I'll just assume that in this scenario my team is made up of a decent skill set.

Now the amount of time that it would require and being away from my family is why I don't coach anymore. I was never a head coach.

Sure.

Coach in the Midwest.

Put the fast black kid at qb and let him cook.

State finals, easy.

I have no football coaching experience. I sent an email to James Franklin telling him I could coach his team to a 9-3 record without a $100 million 10 year contract. If not, I would manage the clock for him for $80,000 per year, 12 games.

That was last year. I didn’t hear from him. I could lose to Michigan and Ohio state every year too.

You got to have a fast black kid first before you can put him at QB and let him cook

Not unless you had excellent position coaches. And there is still a ton of stuff to do off the field like weight training, organizing practices, game planning anf watching film among many more jobs the head coach has.

I helped coach peewee football when my sons were young, even at that level it's a big job that takes up a lot of your time if you want to win.

I am an assistant coach for high school...could I coach a HS team to a .500 record? Maybe...depends on the job. There are some jobs that if you can just keep the kids out of trouble and get the team bus to the field on Friday, you can go .500 because your athletes are so much better than the others you play. Now, could you coach that team to a state championship that way? Probably not. At some point you're gonna have to know what you're doing put your team in a situation to win.

What experience do you have that makes you believe you can call an offense lol

How are you blocking counter vs an odd front boundary reduction?

If you just fundamentally drilled those to death like Vince Lombardi did and never turned the ball over and had a kicker, you could probably win a 3-5 games each year on just that alone.

If the parents are happy about winning 3-5 games, they probably only have enough talent to win 1 or 2

Depends on the talent level and the buy in from parents. Could I go .500 at Catholic, West Monroe, Karr, Ruston, STM, Calvary, etc.? I could literally just show up on Friday night and go .500 at those schools.

No, you could not. Not even close.

I'll be honest. I could jump in and be a position coach at the high school level pretty easily. I could not be a HC.

I have zero experience designing a playbook from scratch, teaching said playbook, play calling, creating a game plan, changing the gameplay at halftime, etc. I would need more experience in that matter before I can jump in and immediately start winning.
