Could Houston or DFW support a second pro sports franchise in the same league?

All the metro areas ahead of them have at least one cross town rivalry. Los Angeles has three.

Houston would never support another MLB franchise or really any pro franchise imo.

If you were going to do that, you’d probably just make it in San Antonio or Austin. In the current climate of things they’d probably build the stadium in some random place in between those two to try to get traffic in from both directions of I35

Not football, the cowboys are a religion in DFW. Not enough interest in NHL.

That’s tough. Places like NY and Chicago have had 2 teams for years, and I think it thrived because they identified with the neighborhood or borough. Adding a second team to a major market hasn’t been done in a while, has it?
From a numbers standpoint, I think it could work. It takes a long time to get from one end to the other in Houston and DFW. A suburb team might do well, BUT…the trend in baseball at least is to add your MiLB affiliates close by, which you have with teams like Sugar Land and Frisco.
Interesting idea instead of always running out Portland and Nashville for expansion places.

I mean if your goal with expansion is to find new fans and new revenue streams, those still make way more sense than doubling down in markets you already own

I could be wrong here, but Houston is really just an Astros town, right? The Texans and Rockets are just kinda there.
Dallas, well, nobody is competing with the Cowboys. Maybe another MLB or NBA team could work, but it’s not with the risk.

They are not big enough. You need a metro area of at least 9 or 10 million. New York has three NHL teams spread out over the area with a population of 20 million. Los Angeles has a population of about 12 million and they can support two in NBA, NHL, MLB, and NFL. Chicago has 9 million and two historical baseball teams.

I think a MLB team in the northern suburbs of Dallas could work. Put the stadium in Frisco or McKinney and you have enough high income people who are a pretty long drive from the Rangers stadium in Arlington.

This. Whole concept is a relic of the past IMO. Especially now that the money is in TV, not the gate.
It would seem silly to me to have a second team anywhere other than NYC and LA, and even in those towns I think it’s debatable whether or not the team that plays second fiddle would be better off elsewhere.
The White Sox are where they are because of history, but if you were starting out today would you really put a team on the south side instead of Nashville, Charlotte, SLC, etc? I doubt it.

Enough large metro areas deserving the consideration to have their first shot at a franchise way before DFW or H-town should be considered for a 2nd one.

Maybe hockey or basketball in DFW. Cowbitches are sacred here and DFW area sucks as a baseball town.

Houston has no chance, I'm not convinced we will support the NHL. I think DFW could support another NBA team but the new arena in Plano probably kills that's.

They got a ways to go to be in the class with NYC, LA, and Chicago… all those 2 team cities are from the days where ticket sales were the end-all be-all. Those would never happen with TV being the main source of revenue like it is now. The current teams especially wont like their market cannibalized
