2005-11/18/11.
The fallout from Oklahoma State losing to Iowa State is what ended the golden age of college football.

Hard to stay emotionally invested when players have no loyalty to schools anymore.
They wouldn’t have had any loyalty in any time period if the rules had allowed it

Worst thing about the ‘90s (most of it) was no BCS or playoff system. You had split titles in 1990, 1991, 1997, and essentially 1994 too.

Does anyone remember the ESPN 'Gameplan' thing that you could pay like $99 for the season and get access to more games most of them were shitty but I bought it every season from like 2004 to 2008ish or whenever they discontinued it. Might have been exclusive to Directv. I can remember a lot of Saturday nights staying up until like 2AM watching Hawaii vs San Jose State.

Don’t forget the Big East. WVU was a legit team

Certainly a fair point. You can even throw 1993 in the mix too.
FSU 12-1 finishes #1 despite losing at Notre Dame.
Notre Dame finishes #2 despite beating FSU and losing to a top 12 Boston College team.
Head to head didn’t really matter.

You forgot the best part, 1 loss FSU getting in over undefeated West Virginia. Which is why they should stop crying about "getting screwed" in 2023.

If we're being honest, it peaked in 2005. The build up of that USC dynasty->Texas taking it down is, and always will be, the pinnacle of college football

2003-2012 will always be my favorite period. But if it's just 5 years then 2003-2007.

I miss Big East Football

I'd argue 90s to 2014 or so.
I'll also say that from 2005 on, half of the Heisman winners definitely or were adjacent to cheating/paying players.
Meant with no offense to Bama's dynasty, but the sport got a bit more boring around then. I like the parity more now, but it's just mercenary ball at this point which ruins it a bit. I like that we've had multiple champs in recent years, but it's all just who paid for a large roster now.
Also of note when I was researching the above statment about paid players... I had no idea that Jim Tressel was the Lt Governor of Ohio.

Agreed. 2007 was one of my favorite years of football ever. Big East had so many chances to send somebody to the BCS and kept upsetting each other.

The interest, chatter, argument, regionalism, tribalism, Network debates, fan vitriol was an all-time high, due to the seemingly ever-changing, nebulous method of securing one of those two coveted BCS spots....every game and style points, bias and perception mattered like we'll never see again.

One thing we can all agree on:
2007 regular season was bat shite insane.
May never be topped.
