Explain how this explains the low attendance

cheap owners tend to eschew fan outreach.

teams that do that tend to have shitty attendance.

The name change did a lot of damage, no doubt. I would also consider dumping the team if my team stupidly abandoned a perfectly acceptable name and logo that had been in place for decades. Guardians is one shitty arse nickname and logo. Same with Washington Football Team. That name and logo fricking blows. There was nothing wrong with Indians and Redskins. I hope both of these teams continue to suck arse for the foreseeable future.

Dolans suck arse, but this team has only had like 16 home games. Lot of rainouts and doubleheaders.

The new name sucks.

Spiders would have worked. Not like the Indians had a winning tradition.

Of course - 30% of the fan base will never return till the name is restored - like never ever….

Guardians is a boring and dumb name. They should have commandeered Trash Pandas from rocket city.

Why do we do this every year? Its like nobody understands one thing...its simply weather related! Cleveland is always at the bottom to start the season...ALWAYS!!!!!! Its simply weather. Most fans do not get interested until mid June to start going to games. Do you realize how shitty the weather is in Cleveland during March, April and May? Cold, windy and wet. I would love to see you go sit in the stands for a game that is in the 30's and drizzling rain and windy. For that reason alone, MLB has noticeably been starting the Tribe off on the road way more at the beginning of the season. They have only played like 19 home games to 31 road games thus far. Every year we make a thread about this stupid shite. By the end of the year, Cleveland will gradually climb the attendance list and get to middle"ish" of the pack.

Might have made some difference, but not a big one.

The answer really is they are cheap. All their good players they've had they pretty much let them walk or traded them. They care about making money, not winning.

Same with teams like Oakland, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Miami.

Yes.

After a couple seasons of this experiment they'll be begging for some tribe to come out the woodwork to give their "official blessing" to change the name back.

Did Cleveland have a strong attendance before the change?

In 2016 they ranked 28th in attendance. They did that while going to the World Series and still named the Indians.

The Dolans don't have nearly the net worth that most MLB owners do. That's a huge problem for that franchise and it won't change until they sell the team.

ETA: Looked it up, Larry Dolan is actually worth $4.6B but his kids run the team now. I know there have been problems with the Indians and how much money they actually have available to spend beyond just the owners being cheap. I can't remember exactly what it was though.

It really is amazing how competitive the Indians were despite their low payroll in the mid 2010s. Their scouting and development is absolutely phenomenal, especially when it comes to starting pitching.

Soooo no, this has nothing to do with a name change.

Was thinking this. It probably sucks having your team change names, but if you love the team and sport, you probably overlook it.

Except there are other teams like the Rockies and Flubs that also have chilly spring weather. And both are top 10 in attendance.
