They're using different formulas. ESPN is not counting the first game of a double header in the divisor of the attendance(and they're day behind from yesterday's double header) BR is. They've had 4 games with officially 0 attendance that's throwing that number off.

Is this retribution from their fanbase for doing the idiotic move of changing the name from the Indians?

I am sure that's part of it

They have always struggled to draw attendance and it is strange to me. The Indians are a wildly popular team in that region. I'd say they land between the Browns and Cavs as far as popularity goes. Their attendance problems far, far predate the name change.

When I lived in that area, I used to ask about this from time to time and no one really could come up with a good answer. A few people told me it was as a protest against the cheapskate Dolans, but I don't believe that many people would skip going to games just because they don't like the owner.

Jacobs Field is nice, the stadium is downtown in an area that is easy to walk around (it's not 1998 anymore; you won't get shot walking downtown) with several bars and a casino nearby. I've never understood it. Even when they were really good in the 2016-2018 range, they struggled to sell tickets.

ETA: Population isn't the issue either. Cleveland metro has about 2 million people and Akron metro has another 700,000. Akron is about 40-45 minutes from Cleveland.

Similar to the A's, ownership is cheap.

Explain how this explains the low attendance

No, Cleveland is just a miserable place filled with miserable people. They won't even support a winner.

Now, you can ask the same question, worded differently. Is the lack of interest from fans a sign that no one really cared if the mascot was offensive?

Those fans love their teams. I can't imagine what it would look like in the muni lot if the Browns host a playoff game.

Imagine having all that history and media and pop culture exposure associated with the name and branding of your team... And you all flush it down the toilet because fake accounts on Twitter run by the CIA and China told you 'Indian' is somehow the reason a drug addict died while being apprehended by police.

The Guardians sound like a minor league LaCrosse team.
