Jorge Soler was back in action in Arizona. He went 1-2 with a HR. I really hope he remains on the field.

Baez and Bryant each had hits in both games of Iowa's doubleheader yesterday. In game one, Bryant was 1 for 2 with 2 BB (!!!). Baez singled and K'd twice. In game two, Bryant had a double and Baez had a 3 for 4 game with 2 doubles.

Arismendy Alcantara finished Game One 2 for 3 with a double and his 9th home run. In Game Two he doubled again.

Manny went 0 for 4 with 2 K's and played LF.

Kyle Hendricks only allowed 2 R on 6 IP with 4 K and 2 BB.

Kyle Schwarber named MWL positional player of the week for destroying baseballs.

Kane County pitcher Daury Torrez (21 years old) named MWL pitcher of the week.

Dae-Eun Rhee (25 years old) named Southern League pitcher of the week.

And the PCL's player of the week is Arismendy Alcantara. On the year, Alcantara is hitting .301/.343/.547. Over his last 33 games, he’s even hotter, hitting .349/.394/.635 with a 7.3% BB rate and a 20.4% K rate.

Alcantara also hit the light tower with a moonshot last week. I wonder if he'll be the first big call up this year. PS, I had no idea, but his last name is evidently pronounced "ALL-CONTRA".

With the way everything is going right now...all the prospects doing what they should be doing, elite pitching from pick ups, MLB club playing .500 baseball for a while, Rizzo & Castro tearing it up, bullpen beauty, Mcleod staying to watch all this unfold, everything is really starting to fit into one big picture for everyone to freely see.

Just really wish the local writers could see this and actually write about it, instead of the usual "waaa they're making money hand over fist they should buy expensive free agents", and "waaa the fans are done waiting do something".

The worst part about the handwringing over not paying for expensive free agents is that that's the same goddamn thing that got the Cubs into this mess.

Not to mention, how often to overpriced free agent contracts really work out well for the franchise that signs those stupid deals?

I think mooney gets it. I avoid wittenmyer like the plague because he's really taken the change in ownership and lack of favoritism hard to where all he does now is bang the cubs suck drum.

This.

Moving to a different topic, everyone still feeling the same about Junior Lake? I thought the plan to protect him earlier in the year was a great one, but now that he's gotten the regular at bats everyone was clamoring for it seems like he's going backwards, or at least not progressing.

Looks like Theo & co. is stocking up all the bats and from what's being talked about around the league is lack of bats coming in, trying to be ahead of the curve yet again.

For the love of everything holy and righteous, I hope they're right, again.

Nice haul for the Cubs

quote:

Catcher: Here’s the Cubs’ lone spot without a top prospect. Kyle Schwarber was announced as a catcher when he was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2014 draft, but he’s already seeing time in the outfield, too. In fact, he’s made seven starts each at catcher and left field since beginning his pro career last month. Most everyone expects him to end up in left, and if that’s the case, then there’s no one in the system who figures to overtake incumbent Welington Castillo at any point.

First base: And this is the one given. Anthony Rizzo has followed up a disappointing 2013 by hitting .276/.387/.493 with 17 homers in 83 games this season. He’s just 24, and he’s locked up through 2019, with club options through 2021. He’s not going anywhere.

Second base: The Cubs have a natural second base prospect in Arismendy Alcantara, who has hit .311/.351/.547 with 10 homers and 20 steals in Triple-A this year. He’s also seen some time in center field this year, so that’d be another option for him if Baez ends up getting move to second. Alcantara seems like a better fit at the position, though. Of all of the Cubs position prospects, he’s in the best position to contribute this year.

Third base: Bryant was considered a candidate to move to the outfield after being picked second overall in the 2013 draft, but he’s yet to start anywhere other than third. Perhaps the best hitter in the minors, he’s batted .352/.449/.707 with 28 homers in 307 at-bats between Double- and Triple-A this year. His bat is likely ready now, though it’s uncertain if the Cubs have any intention of making room for him in the short term.

Shortstop: Between the Starlin Castro renaissance and Russell’s addition, it seems clear that Baez isn’t going to be a shortstop for the long haul. Russell is the more fluid defended anyway, and many believed Baez would need to move to a less demanding position mid-career anyway. Russell figures to continue to be brought along at short, but it’s hard to say what his future looks like now. Castro is under control through 2019, with a club option for 2020. Maybe he’ll get cashed in for a young starter or a catcher at some point, but it doesn’t figure to happen this season.

Left field: Schwarber has been a terror since debuting, hitting .446/.532/.923 with eight homers in 65 at-bats in the low minors. This should be his position, unless one of the more advanced prospects gets moved here and beats him to the majors.

Center field: The hope is that 2012 first-rounder Albert Almora will be the long-term answer in center. He’s had a very disappointing 2014 so far, hitting .266/.292/.357 with three homers in 297 at-bats in the Florida State League. However, he’s just 20 and he’s coming off a .329/.376/.466 season in the Midwest League. Baseball America has placed him as the game’s 33rd and 36th best prospect in his two years since being drafted. If not Almore than Billy McKinney, the other prospect the Cubs picked up from the A’s, could be the man here. The 19-year-old McKinney, a 2013 first-rounder, was hitting .241/.330/.400 as one of the youngest players in the California League.

Right field: Baez might make the most sense in right if Alcantara pans out and Bryant stays at third. Possessing perhaps the best raw power in the minors, he’s overcome a dreadful start to hit .240/.307/.430 as a 21-year-old in Triple-A this year. The other possibility here is Cuban defector Jorge Soler. He’s battled injury problems since signing a nine-year, $30 million contract two summers ago, but he still has a lot of power potential himself. When healthy, he’s hit .298/.368/.487 with 14 homers in 386 at-bats during his minor league career.

So, what do you think?

SS Russell
2B Alcantara
3B Bryant
1B Rizzo
RF Baez
LF Schwarber
CF Almora
C Castillo

I like the possibilities. Can you break it down similarly on pitching? That's my bigger concern.

CJ Edwards is the Cubs best SP prospect. They got him in the deal for Garza last season. He was projected to possibly make his MLB debut later this season, but an injury has sidelined him most of the year and he will probably be up sometime next season, barring health. He's a tall and slender 22 y/o RHP. He has 200 MiLB innings under his belt with a sub 2 ERA and 12 k/9.

After Edwards, it gets cloudy as far as minor league talent goes.

The next guy is Pierce Johnson, who probably has the makings of a SP3/SP4. He's another 23 y/o RHP. He has 3 solid pitches and relies on his command to be effective. We should see him in Chicago sometime next season.

Kyle Hendricks was the Cubs MiLB pitcher of the year last season. We got him in the Dempster deal a few years back. He's another solid, back of the rotation type with similar stuff to Johnson. He's pitching well in AAA now, and will probably get a taste of Chicago very soon.

Corey Black is a hard throwing righty who we got for Alfonso Soriano. He was a 4th rd pick in 2012. He has a sub 3 ERA and is missing bats at AA. There is talks that he could move to the pen, where he would be able to let that 100 mph gas fly.

Paul Blackburn was drafted out of HS in 2012 and perhaps could sneak up as the Cubs top MiLB arm very soon if he continues to develop. He's dominating A ball, but as of now is probably still a few years away. He's another RHP who has plus command of 3 pitches.

Arodys Vizcaino is the closer of the future. He pitched for the Braves a few years back and got hurt and is finally back on track to make the show sometime this season. He has all the makings of a good closer and already has MLB experience as a starter.

The pitchers don't really get most excited. I think Edwards is far and away the best prospect in turns of being a front of the rotation guy. The rest of the guys are pretty solid and will either be used to fill out the rotation or come out of the pen. Theo will have some work to do to bring in a stud SP1 that can be the anchor of the rotation for 5+ years. The good thing is, there is a lot of organization pitching depth. It may not boast many top of the line guys, but it's filled with solid arms.

Going forward, I would say by 2016 the rotation may look something like:

SP1- trade or FA signing (Max Scherzer plz)
SP2- Jake Arrieta
SP3- CJ Edwards
SP4- Pierce Johnson
SP5- Kyle Hendricks

I think we will see Corey Black setting up Arodys Vizcaino out of the pen.

I also wouldn't be shocked if we picked up 2 veteran SPs. A top of the line guy like Scherzer or Lester, and then maybe add mid level guy like Jason Hammel.

Cubs would be better off not getting in a bidding war with BOS. They will pay to keep him there, and he's not worth significantly more than what BOS will offer him.

Well they have 8 of MLBs top 100 prospects. Even if only the 4 who are in the top 15 pan out, they will be fine.

Bryant, Baez, Alcantara, and Scwarber have bats that are close to being MLB ready

Russell may end up being the best of them, but he hammy injury slowed him down this season. He may have saw time in Oakland this year if not for injury.

I still need to see more from Soler and Almora. They are 2+ years away anyway.

I'm not high on the pitching but I'm confident CJ Edwards will be a solid SP and vizcaino will be a good bullpen arm.

Louis, I don't even really care for Lester. He will be overpaid wherever he signs. I'd trust Theo to throw him and offer and see what happens, though
