I would also think Valbuena is more valuable to the Cubs than any realistic offer they'd get. Don't you?

The Cubs was him to walk more. As it stands, his BB% sits at 6.4.

He just started playing the OF about a month ago. If he's called up, he will be playing 2B, I imagine. He will be the first of the heralded MiLB players to make the show.

Oh absolutely, which is why it's a 'knock your sox off' offer, but it's never wise to underestimate how desperate teams get at the trade deadline (especially a go for it now team like the royals, i don't know they'd even have a need for luis, just using them as an example and that deal they cut for sheilds).

I would think Luis can generate some interest. A left handed bat that has managed to get his OBP around .400 for most of the season. Guy puts together very solid at bats almost everytime he goes to the plate. He isn't fast and doesn't have a fantastic glove.

Certainly think he is more valuable to the Cubs as a guy they can move around for some prospects to play other positions. He's better than Barney, that's for 100% sure.

I was speaking more along the lines of Top 100 MiLB type lists.

Valbeuna could be in play for Toronto if they want Shark bad enough. Sounds like they will not part with both Sanchez and Daniel Norris in a deal for Shark. But they could come calling for Valbuena along with Shark since Lawrie just went down. We have to watch out for the Rays offering Price/Zobrist to TOR for a huge prospect package.

I could also see NYY making a move on Valbuena.

You guys, you guys. Mark Appel's ERA is 16.39. 16.39!!!

I don't even want to think about the Cubs without Kris Bryant.

Alcantara just walked. He's been on base three out of four times today.

I wonder if STL would be interested in Shark now with their recent rash of SP injuries

That's interdivisional and not likely, but not impossible. I read something about that the other day. STL is scouting David Price.

In Bryant's last 171 games (including college) he has hit 66 bombs

interdvisional, but not exactly competitive against one another at the current time. Cubs have a recent history of landing some players within the division, dating back to Aramis Ramirez and more recently Travis Wood

i agree, prob unlikely cause i dont think STL is that desperate..

I think the Cubs think they're close to contending and would not like to trade Samardzija to compete against them when they are.

When the Cubs traded with the Reds, the Cubs were nowhere near competitive. Same with the Pirates, I believe. The Pirates were terrible and at that time had given up on Aramis Ramirez. At least that's how I remember it. I think this situation is different.

if they could get 2 young near-MLB ready starting pitchers, for 1. I think they'd do it.

I dont think STL is that reactionary though. IM just thinking out loud

And then think of STL...they'd have two near ML-ready pitchers facing them. I hear ya though.

yea but Wacha and Garica just hit the DL with shoulder problems. Depending on the seriousness, that would have been the motivation.

How do you all feel about them trading Shark and the prospects that they wanted from Toronto?

Aaron Sanchez and Daniel Norris are very high prospects for the Blue Jays and that would be a very nice return. The CF, Dalton Pompey, is in A ball and his having a very good year with a .312 AVG, good OBP and approach and 27 steals.

If they get that, it's a win.

As long as they get a couple top pitching prospects it is really hard to fault them. I wouldn't mind seeing them sign him, but knowing that isn't going to happen, it's hard to fault them for picking up a couple good arms. I feel like Theo and company have come out on top of most of the trades they have pulled off thus far...Neil Ramirez, Grimm, Olt and CJ Edwards all for Garza appears to heavily favor the Cubs. Getting Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop for Feldman and Clevenger was a good deal for the Cubs.

The scouting of high quality players seems to have improved over the last few years, so I think whatever the Cubs pull off for Samardzija will benefit the Cubs.
