Chargers Move from SD to LA really that big of a deal??

The true Chargers fans will have no real problem with the commute since it is relatively short (less than a couple hrs) plus the NFL gets what it desperately wants (Team in LA).
IMO, this move will have a little effect on the fans but a great gain for the NFL. Minn moving to LA would be great for the league but awful for the current fans of the Vikes.
Just a thought.

I don't really see that many people driving the 2 hour trip each way to go see their team play. I still see the fans being upset about a move. I would be pissed if the Panthers, who have a stadium 10 minutes from my house moved to Greenville or some other town about 2 hours away. Disclaimer: I know Greenville isn't large enough to support an NFL team, just using it as an example relevant to distance traveled for your example.

Sure you will lose some casual fans but IMO 2hrs 10 times a year is not that big of a deal. The diehard fans will still be able to attend (some may live in the LA area anyway); whereas, diehard Vikes fans would be effed.
Hell even the casual Charges fan would be able to make the trip a once or twice a yr no problem.

It's am option. The Chargers are usually mentioned every year for possible relocation to LA (back to the team's original location) due to the lack of support for a new stadium. But if anyone thinks that relocation decisions are made with the fans' interest in mind, they are sadly mistaken.
Personally, I would like to see Minn remain and either SD or Jacksonville move to LA.

I'm just saying there is a large difference between driving 10 minutes, picking up tailgating supplies on the way and parking right at the stadium, hitting bars after and catching a cab home. To driving 2 hours, doing whatever after (bars or drive home) then driving back or getting a hotel for the night.

jacksonville should be the one that moves. there is pretty much zero interest in that team even when they are winning.

Maybe so but if that happens then the NFL would have to reorganize divions or the new LA team would be at a severe disadvantage when it comes to travel.

It didn't stop them from sending Atlanta and New Orleans to LA and San Fran every year. Or sending Phoenix out to NYC, Washington and Philly.

Panthers were in NFC West for a few years, so it has been done before. I don't think this would be a major issue at first but I think they would do some shuffling eventually as they did when we hopped into NFC South.

The drive is almost never 2 hours, traffic is a bitch
I've made that drive many times before, sometimes i just wanna

I don't know that the NFL REALLY wants a team in L.A. In their last years, both the Rams and Raiders (never a real fit in L.A. IMO) had anemic fan support. I think the NFL LIKES the idea that the second largest TV market has no team and needs one, which is then used as a bargaining chip to bring recalcitrant fanbases to push through stadium deals.
As long as the NFL can hang L.A. over a particular state or local electorate to get stadia approved, they will. Their biggest gambit is shot once they actually move a team to Los Angeles.

Most college football fans drive a couple of hours to see games 7-8 times a year. I think that pro fans could do it.
The NFL needs to do a better job of marketing their teams regionally. They are too connected with one city. It is ridiculous that people in Mississippi or Mobile sometimes aren't considered "real" Saints fans by New Orleans residents just because they don't live in New Orleans. Baton Rouge has the same problem. Teams need to be more associated with regions, in my opinion, and less exclusively associated with cities.

I do every weekend to see the Titans play and so do many of the Titans fans. My brother drives 1.5 hrs to see the Vikes every Sunday too. It's not out of the ordinary at all to travel for NFL games.

You do realize that the Panthers used to play their home games in Clemson, South Carolina.

Jacksonville has sold out every game this year. If you're going to suggest a fanbase "deserves" to lose their NFL franchise at least have an idea of the current dynamics.

aren't they blocking off huge sections of seats with tarps?

In 1960, they were the Los Angeles Chargers. They then moved to San Diego.
And the NFL really doesn't want a team in LA, as it will eliminate the owners' ability to hold cities hostage for new stadia.
Plus, having 8 blackouts a year in the second largest TV market in the country is bad for business.

quote:Yea, I know that. There was also a train that took people to those games and there is also something called the novelty of having a new NFL team for people to go to. I understand some people travel hours to go see their teams play in different cities but these examples are of small town people driving to the bigger towns to see the game. Sorry if I don't see it happening that where people in a big city are used to not traveling very far to see their games to traveling 2 hours then hit L.A. traffic to see them play.

Which, of course, explains why they haven't had any blackouts this season. Oh, wait...
