Why isn't AU #2?

I agree on Alabama being rated too high, but I am constantly amazed by how much stock people put into not having a returning starter at QB.

Alabama has won 2 national championships with 1st year QB's. They won their 3rd against ND who had a 1st year QB.

Auburn won a national championship in 2010 with a 1st year QB.

Florida State just won a national championship with a 1st year QB and they beat a team who was starting a 1st year QB that played a different position at another school.

Because the coaches don't think they'll pull as many lucky wins out of their asses this year.

PAC-12 is going to be good this year... To the detriment of the PAC-12

Kind of nervous for ASU being ranked. If we can finish being ranked at the end of the season, that'd be great. Defense will be pretty porous although the offense should be one of the top in the nation.

Why isn't everyone just starting first year QBs? That's obviously how you win championships. Saban couldn't even see that he should've benched McCarron for having too much experience last year

How many of those teams won a national championship with a true freshman LT?

To take that as the point I was making is just being ignorant. I was just saying to act like it can't be done is annoying. You'd obviously prefer to have a more experienced guy, but we've seen in the past couple of years it really isn't that huge a detriment to a team, especially if the surrounded pieces are really good.

O-Line is probably our biggest question mark tbh, much more than QB. Mainly the reason I probably wouldn't have us nearly ranked as high.

Michigan unranked sounds about right.

Anyone see the others receiving votes?

Those championships came courtesy of an experienced O-line and a stout defense.

Hmm...who's going into the season this year with a similar set-up?

Notre Dame at 17 is a joke. As is Texas even in the top 25.

Name recognition absolutely pisses me off. I hope they get the breaks beaten off of them.

eta...while I like some discussion about it, it's absolutely ridiculous for a poll to come before week 6.

well the polls don't matter when it's decided on the field now

The polls will still influence the playoff committee. I don't put much stock in the coaches poll though, as I believe most coaches delegate poll duties to subordinates.

It's cool to see who is ranked where in a preseason poll because it means CF is just around the corner, but I don't put any worth in the polls until about 4 or 5 games into the season.

Bull. shite.

Bama starting highly over ranked is huge. It allows for a much greater margin of error. If they lose a game, the lowest they will drop is 6. Meanwhile if another team started the year at the back end or out of the top 25 and they drop a game at the wrong time, they have no shot of making the playoffs.

Let's say Washington runs the table and loses to Oregon State. They're probably out even if they win the PAC. On the other hand Bama loses to LSU, but wins out. They'll get the nod because they lost on the road. Plus like I said they'll only need to move up 2 slots to make it back to the top 4.

From finishing #5 last season to unranked at the start of this season. Alright then.
