A major entertainment event that brought millions of dollars to the city and sold out the Dome should be left off the list?
Guess we can leave off concerts as well.
Well MSG had more, so I was actually helping the Dome argument by removing

20 WHOLE minutes??? OMG!
If you think that's bad, you must be one of those fat asses at Wal mart who has to use a motorized cart to get around

I'll also pile this onto my Superdome argument: Football and baseball titles matter way more than basketball and hockey titles, and I defy any of you to posit otherwise. So, of football and baseball (0), the Superdome has seen 18 championships clinched (7 NFL, 11 college). Of the lesser two, basketball and hockey, the Superdome has seen five (all college), and MSG has seen 4 titles clinched in 9 series (5 NBA, 4 NHL).
As an historic sports venue, the Superdome is so far ahead of MSG that no discussion is even warranted. It's obvious.

Metallica played the Superdome. Think about that the next time you go there.

Like a ton of other folks have said, one of the major positives of the Superdome is the location.
Taken in a vacuum the facility itself is okay, not great. I'd probably put it in the middle (maybe even the lower half) of NFL venues. But you simply cannot beat the overall experience. I've been to either major bowls or NFL games in NOLA, DC (Landover, MD to be precise), Baltimore, Pasadena, Phoenix, and Tampa, of those New Orleans/Supersome was the best experience for me.
The venue doesn't have to be the best, it just has to be good enough. The Superdome is good enough, and being able to walk to one of the best entertainment districts in the world with lots of bars, hotels, restaurants, etc is just awesome.

So all this thread has evolved into is a MSG, Superdome pissing match.

I'm completely right. Look at the list of big sporting events at each venue, and the Superdome is light years ahead.

I love sport stadiums and their histories.
This has been fun.
I'd say we've whittled it down to the Superdome and MSG for most-historic, relevant, and significant among currently-used sports stadia.
We all have our favorites. :-)

You're basically saying that neutral site championship football games(and despite being on a LSU themed board, most of the country certainly doesn't think college football titles are more important than NBA or NHL titles) trump the year round entertainment offered at MSG. I mean I've lived in NYC for a year and it's unreal how there is some world class event going on there almost every week where there isn't already 3 pro teams playing.
Plus, MSG championships, while few and far between, have a more special feel since it's the home team playing.

As far as history, I would say that the Superdome is top five in the US, but not #1.
IMO MSG probably gets the #1 spot. It just has more mystique and national recognition in large part b/c it is in the cultural/media/business capital of the US.
I'd also consider the Rose Bowl, Fenway, Wrigley, and Lambeau.

The Big East tourney was in the magical MSG! Willis Reed! ESPN touts its "Magic" every single fricking time they try to sell you a game broadcast from there!
It has to be number 1!
Don't forget that Barbara Streisand sold it out on many occasions! Culture AND Magic!

Didn't read whole thread. Or there any chances they build another dome in NOLA? When? Where? Just curious. Don't know the immediate plans

doubtful there isn't any open talk, I think Benson and the state are both happy with the dome

google maps shows a huge open plot of land on the river by the convention center, but I would hope if they did build a new stadium they would tear down the dome, have the saints play at ts for a few years, and rebuild where it is.

Carrie Bradshaw says MSG. Terry Bradshaw says Superdome. Which are you?
