The Dome is iconic, stood the test of time. No other dome compares. Was built to be able to be a multi function facility. I watched professional baseball and basketball played there. Numerous concerts. Part of the city's identity. Remodel every so many years and we are fine. I like the look of the outside, especially now with Mercedes sponsorship and the lights.

I been to Jerry's world. Not that impressed for the price he paid. Had seats in the second level. it took 3 different stadium managers to figure out how to get to those seats. We had to go to the 4th level then back to the second level. there was no way to get to the second level from the first level. Exposed beams throughout. seemed more industrial in looks. The huge screen was nice but i found it distracted from the game on the field. Only advantage i guess is that more seats square up with the sidelines than an oval configuration.

With todays money value. To rebuild the Dome as it is would cost way over a billion. I think if we tried to build a new stadium it would be of lesser quality than what we have now. The dome was way ahead of its time when built and i think it stays ahead of lots of newer stadiums.

The superdome is one of the better sports venues

You have the original jerry world smack dab in the middle of downtown. You can walk from the FQ to the dome, hotel to the dome, cbd to the dome...it is just awesome to have that kind of place in a metropolitan area.

Now a few things. The surrounding downtown area is in desperate need of improvement. There really isn't much to do downtown or in the FQ. That is the number one draw no other facility can really match. Additionally, facilities like jerry world are going to be the norm, but I think they've done a great job keeping the dome up to date.

As a stadium, it is a marvel that has stood the test of time, and not just as a football venue. New Orleans will keep drawing Super Bowls and big events there so long as it is kept in great condition.

Right, you can walk anywhere and there are hotels and restaurants everywhere.

out there today.

Not really.

It's perfectly serviceable and in about as good a location as you can get, though.

I agree. The only reason it's even considered for these events is because they picked the right location for it by building it so close to the French Quarter.

If the dome was built on the Westbank somewhere, New Orleans would never be considered for any of these prestigious sporting events. Within the next 10 years another stadium will need to be built and when it does come time to build it, I hope it's placed on the river.

This.

And the result of not having to drive and being so close of a walk to the French Quarter is a VERY drunk crowd which in turn makes it an AWESOME atmosphere in there regardless of sport/game.

Ignore the NOLA transplant living in Austin. He does nothing but flame the city like it's the cool thing to do.

If you can't have fun and find something to do in the French Quarter, I feel sorry for you.

Seriously man, what?

I would argue that the Superdome is the most historic and relevant stadium in all Americans sports right now.

Forget Lambeau Field- how many Super Bowls were played there? And theyve re-done it so much, it barely resembles the stadium that was there from the 1950's/60's. Same with Soldier Field.

Yankee Stadium is GONE. The Boston Garden is GONE.

The Rose Bowl plays ONE BIG game a year. The Orange Bowl isnt in the Orange Bowl anymore.

Wrigley Field and Fenway Park are mainly baseball-only venues- and the Cubs havent played a World Series since the 1940's.

Here's a short list of some of the important things that have happened at the Superdome since 1975:

Pope John Paul II Papal Mass
Frank Sinatra, Prince, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, and every other huge musical act
George Bush "Read My Lips No New Taxes" 1988 RNC Convention
Super Bowls
Final Fours- including Michael Jordan's UNC in 1982, Indiana's epic last second win in 1987, and Chris Webber of Michigan calling a timeout he didnt have in 1993
Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran "No Mas" fight
Muhammad Ali vs. Leon Spinks rematch
Wrestlemania!!!!
Sugar Bowls
CFB National Championship Games

These are just off the top of my head-there's loads more.

What currently-used American venue can come close to this for importance, history, significance, and relevance?

I'm trying to figure out why he said an area with nothing to do is something no other venue can match.

Can't forget Katrina.

Sure it is not a positive story, but what other sports venue in the world was featured for months on international news?

The Superdome is awful inside.

That being said, NOLA is the absolute best place for hosting large sporting events.

1.3 miles

1.02 to Harrahs

That's an easy walk when you are just doing 1 time in your trip. to see the game.

Please the walk is a solid 20 minutes especially when stopping for traffic lights on every corner (it is 16 with no traffic according to google)

not sure when you've been, but they actually shut Poydras down after the game so people can walk in the street.
