re: Celebrities in attendance for Mike Tyson’s return in 1995

Ah Peter “Hurricane” McNealy. One of the most fabricated heavyweight “contenders” of all time. He fought 9 bums who had a combined record of 120-184-5 to give him a 9-0 undefeated record. The WBA and WBC then put him in their top 10 so he could be fed to Tyson in his return fight out of prison. Tyson predictably beat the frick out of him. What’s crazy is it’s still in the top 10 of the biggest earning boxing PPVs of all time with 1.55 million PPV buys.

I don’t remember Mayweather fights having the same “must watch” element to them.
I mean their the most watched PPV events ever…

Not to mention the knockout fighter is more watchable than the dink and dunk, technical boxer.
This is true except when it comes to Floyd the greatest boxer ever… the numbers prove it …

You are not wrong but I think we also have to take into account the accessibility of PPV in 1995 vs Floyd’s time, especially in the smaller cities and rural areas.

Floyd's record doesn't come close to Sugar Ray Robinson's record.
His first 11 professional years he was 129-1-2 with 85 (!) knockouts. Floyd had a total of 50 fights.
Sugar Ray fought everyone, no cherry picking. He was 43-0 as a welterweight. He moved up to middleweight and was a five time champion.
He fought many times with only one to three weeks (!) between fights.
Most boxing experts say he is the greatest pound for pound boxer in history. He was a boxer who could punch. Think Sugar Ray Leonard on steroids, lol.

Old school Vegas cab drivers all say nothing ever compared to a Tyson fight night.

Dude lost 19 times… his first 30 something fights against nobody…

I saw Tyson vs Black Rhino in Memphis. Tyson knocked him out immediately and the guy in front of me was late getting back to his seat and missed the whole thing.

David Spade was in attendance for the Rousey return this past Saturday

That statement alone tells me you are nothing more than a casual boxing fan and have bought into the "0 in the loss column" is the guideline for determining greatness in a boxer's career.
There are not many current boxers who will see 50 fight careers by the time they hang up the gloves.
Great fighters don't cherry pick their opponents, they aim to fight the best opponent available to test themselves.
Four that immediately come to mind for me are:
Ray Leonard
Marvin Haggler
Tommy Hearns
Roberto Duran
Somewhere in their careers they met and fought each other and let fate run its course. All of the above had losses and I put all of them well ahead of Mayweather as far as ring greatness is concerned.

I remember after that Tyson return fight just continuing to tell people Holyfield was going to whip him. No one would listen. No man, you are crazy, Tyson is the best their ever was. Pocketed a lot of cash on that fight.

You could see the fear in his eyes when he walked to the ring. Dude wanted to be any other place than across from Iron Mike at that moment...

I remember this one. At our camp we had the satellite with the little black card where you could get all the PPVs free so we watched this one along with all the other subsequent Tyson fights.

Floyd the greatest… I’ve been watching boxing all my life not just the big fights… personality aside Floyd the epitome… look at this way would you rather son box like Floyd or anyone else defensive wise… casuals don’t appreciate not getting hit.. its like only rooting for your football team on offense

You think Sweet P and Floyd in the same class defensively??? Willie Pep had 11 losses ain’t no need comparing his defense to Floyd…
