K is not allowed to advance a ball that is consider a kick beyond the line of scrimmage which it is considered until possessed. This goes for both free kicks (kickoffs) and scrimmage kicks (punts/field goals)

I think the NCAA rule as always been if the kickoff lands in the end zone is a touchback.
I guess I have some real Mandela effect shite going on with regard to this. I really thought it used to be live no matter what.

If it makes you feel any better, I'd have argued my dick in the dirt that you were correct. Apparently, we're both wrong.

By definition a free kick only happens after a safety.

ARTICLE 6. A kickoff is a free kick that starts each half and follows each try or field goal (Exception: In extra periods). It must be a place kick or a drop kick.

In 40 years of watching football, I've never seen a muffed punt returned.

I don't know why OP is suddenly shocked.

There's no rule change, that's just always been the rule.

This has always been a rule but if you think that one is bad, check this one out: as late as 1991, as a defender, you weren't allowed to advance a fumble recovered during a regular offensive play. The ball was deemed dead where you recovered it.

If he called a fair catch,

He did. I assumed that was the issue. Otherwise I assumed it was like a fumble bouncing into the back of a receiving team player.

I assume you can’t return a muffed punt/kick because it keeps the kicking team from nailing a line drive right at the line to deflect off an unsuspecting return team linemen or something therefore causing an advantageous “fumble” for the kicking team to potentially advance forward.

Similar to how the offense can’t advance a fumble. It eliminates the fumble rooskie or a fake stumbling and kick the ball way up field as an advantage.

This reminds me of baseball fans yelling balk every time a pitcher throws to 1st base.

What's really dumb is that the kicking team is not allowed to catch the ball in the air on a kickoff.
It rarely happens, so it's not well known that you have to allow the receiving team the chance to catch it. But if you kick it on the ground it's free game for some reason.

I can see some logic for this like pass interference. Pop the ball up and then just demolish anyone who could catch it (if no fair catch). I would guess like others have the rule is to remove the incentive.

Though I'd have to think harder why the ball hitting the ground one inch from the tee changes anything.

I actually saw this happen while playing in high school. Unfortunately we were the receiving team but fortunately for me I was the guy next to the poor bastard on our team that got nailed by the ball. It was an accident all around but it sure helped speed up the arse whooping we received.

If you're responding to me, I was talking about kickoffs in the 80s.
