Which makes them the perfect fit for Duke, BC, Syracuse, Pitt, and Wake Forest. Then plus UConn could be the new Eastern independents all playing each other

If you thought FSU was pissed before, wait until they have to share money with SMU and pay to fly Olympic sports to Stanford.
No way the GOR survives this if it happens. Might even void it outright!

LOL Notre Dame is not joining. They are just trying to cuck the ACC like they always do.
Have to wait and see. ND joining what is left which would be an extremely weak Conference would be the most ND thing ever. It's basically what FSU did way back in 1992. They weren't looking for a 'challenge' they wanted to be with a bunch of little sisters of the poor in football so they could dominate. ND isn't going to join The B1G. It would be too challenging for their fading football program. All they have is their name. They haven't won anything of note in 35 years. They are a relic of a program when it comes to winning major bowl games or national championships. It's not 1977 anymore.

SMU has one season of 9 or more wins in the past 35 years in the WAC/CUSA/AAC.
But now they have the deep financial resources to be a quality football program for the ACC?

It’s almost like being in a better conference helps you recruit

SMU if they can get into a better conference has potential. They have tons of money are in a great city and supposedly are telling prospective conferences they are going/willing to spend 350 to 500 million on athletic facilities improvements if they are granted entry. They absolutely have the money to do this.

SMU is an example of market presence failure.
You can claim a market all day long - but no real numbers in DFW are tuning in to see the Mustangs play.
With ESPN going broke, the dynamics behind college football metro markets will collapse.

SMU is a tiny school that has been in a shite conference ever since the SWC dissolved. They had plenty of success/interest in the early 80's in big boy football. Death Penalty wrecked them. If they can get into the ACC/Big12/B1G they have the money to do whatever they want. They have to have the 'want' to do it though. SMU is a lot of things but poor isn't one of them. They could literally buy just about any SEC Program other than Texas or A&M.

I bet they did back in the SWC

Apparently Notre Dame is the main school that is really pushing this. They aren’t even a member in football. So weird.
The rest of the ACC should tell ND to join the league in football or STFU.

SMU is quite literally buying its way into this conversation. It has nothing to do with the DFW market.
Their boosters are willing to float the AD while it gets a partial share of the ACC money.

On that theory, the SEC should replace Missouri or Vanderbilt with SMU.

This will be the death blow to the ACC if it happens.
No it will be another step in that direction, but the death blow will be Clemson, FSU, or some other member school challenging the GOR in court and winning it.

The SEC will have their pick of the litter if they want any of them.
Not until 7/1/2036. As it stands now ACC owns the media rights to all home sporting events of its member schools. The GOR will either have to expire or be struck down in court or at least contested in court before an ACC school moves.

not to mention SMU has a whole former president vouching for them

ND stands to get fricked if the ACC dissolves. They have a pretty vested interest in its survival, even if they aren't a football member.
If the ACC folds, ND needs a new conference for their other sports.
ND is only invest in the ACC in order to allow it to have it NBC deal and have 5 quality opponents per year in football. ND was never a problem child in the old Big East. It was content as a member and was solidly in the non-football catholic school camp in the old Big East. ND only left the Big East when it was apparent that the Big East would no longer be a auto-bid (aka BCS) league and unable to provide it with 4-5 "quality" opponents per year. If the ACC folded and ND remained independent in football with its own NBC deal then the Big East would accept ND's non-football sports in a heartbeat.

What I don't get is how can Cal make a deal like Stanford with no money. They have to travel and their athletic department is in debt big time. Hell, they would come out ahead in the Mountain West at least they would be getting some money. I can't see even Duke or Wake wanting to give Cal any split of the money if Stanford will take zero dollars.
If ESPN will not pay any extra to the ACC with Cal, Stanford, and SMU I can see why UNC and NC State are voting no.

ummm i think this gives the 4 schools (FSU, Clemson, UNC, NCState) a ton more leverage in court when it comes to the GOR. Simply put when they signed the GOR they did not agree to play those schools and certainly didnt agree to give up tv rights when playing those teams.
i think it opens the door big time to a legit court challenge.
