Piazza was an elite hitter at the C position, but he was absolute garbage behind the plate

That's actually one of the biggest myths in the history of baseball. Piazza had a terrible arm and couldn't throw out baserunners to save his life. Outside of that, he was excellent at every other aspect of catching defense from blocking pitches, handling a pitching staff, and pitch framing. And those latter three qualities are far more important for a catcher than their ability to throw out baserunners.

Yadi has played 800+ more games than posey and still has accumulated less WAR Career OPS+ of 97. That doesn’t sniff posey and his resume. You’re comparing Ozzie smith to Derek jeter. Molina is just a tier below, no disrespect to him.great defensively and to catch that long is remarkable

But

Posey

MVPx1

Batting title x1
WS x3

Posey and Mauer are clearly the best of the generation, though many people try to shove Yadi down our throats as some kind of gold standard which is pretty laughable and it seems the Salvador Perez HOF push is about to begin as well

3x WS catcher, right, and one of the better hitting catchers of the last 30 yrs.

Baseball writers will salivate over him. He'll get in 1st ballot.

Some will, some won't for many of the reasons already stated in the thread. I think he misses out on 1st ballot because writers are fickle, and he'll get in year 2 or 3

No one denies the hitting prowess of Mauer or Posey, but there's a reason Mauer stopped primarily catching. So you can say he's the best catcher of the generation but he played 1B and DH'd as many games as he caught. For a position that has such an emphasis put on DEFENSE, Molina is better than both Mauer and Posey. That's just fact. The fact that he has caught that many innings at a high level is insane. Molina also has two top 5 MVP finishes, a Silver Slugger, Multiple Gold Gloves & Platinum Gloves & 2 WS.

He’s retiring because he wants to spend more time with his family. IMO we’re going to see that more frequently moving forward, especially people who’ve taken care of their money. And he’ll wind up in Cooperstown.

Mauer won 3 batting titles & an MVP as a catcher & wasn’t really good by the time he switched off that position

1st ballot HOF?

Absolutely

I mean, I don’t give a shite, but I’m surprised that this post of mine has 13 upvotes to 12 downvotes. Could be an anti-me thing, but are there really 12 people in this thread that don’t think Posey is a 1st ballot guy? I wasn’t even arguing that he should be—though he should—I was just saying it’s a no-brainer he gets in 1st ballot, whether you think he deserves it or not (he does) an am confused so many disagree. Cardinals fans

And I remember when everybody 1st heard of him when he hit 6 bombs in 1 game at FSU. I don’t remember who or where they played, but still. That was wild.

He played the equivalent of about 6 seasons at catcher. So, I'm not sure how he'd be considered the best catcher of his generation...

That wasn’t Buster, that was Marshall McDougall.
