There are times where winning a football game is a secondary achievement. A footnote to a larger, more important goal. On a relatively-empty Sunday afternoon slate, with the most eyes on him in weeks — Bryce Young delivered for the Carolina Panthers, cementing himself as the future of the franchise in a way that had been largely up in the air until this point.

quote:

Bryce Young is officially a franchise quarterback, and the monkey is off his back.

The box score tells part of the story: 26-for-46, 298 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT — 3 carries for 17 yards, and another touchdown.

Where Young really shined is the moments that leap off the film. Checking at the line of scrimmage, altering the protections based on exotic blitz packages, making small movements inside the pocket to throw off pursuit angles and alter the pass rushing. When it came to throwing the ball Young was on target, threw with anticipation, and routinely showed off his underrated athleticism to make plays with his legs, or open up throws on the run.

quote:

Bryce Young wasn’t perfect. There were definitely a few passes he lofted, a few plays that went awry — but when you take in the totality of the Carolina offense still lacking players due to injury, Young was impressive beyond anything he should have been capable of. In a few short weeks we’ve gone from talking about Young being a colossal bust, to stepping up and giving the Panthers hope.

As for the “why” it took being benched for Young to take a massive step forward, that much isn’t entirely clear — at least not publicly. There’s been a lot of discussion about how the team rallied around Young, how he took more ownership of his mistakes, and came out the other side being the unequivocal leader of the team. On the field we’re seeing the distributor, point guard-esque abilities that made him a top draft pick, routinely putting the ball where only his receivers can get it, reading defenses, and routinely turning nothing into big plays.

If he can keep it up into next season I’ll be happy to eat some crow but doing well in a throw away season with no real expectations and playing spoiler..meh, I’ve seen some shitty QBs go on a 4-5 game tear before. Shiiiit, the media was ready to crown Justin Fields as a franchise QB after the win against the Broncos earlier this season. I’ll never forget one of those shitty ESPN shows where all the analysts around the table were tripping over themselves to pat themselves on the backs for never losing belief in Justin Fields

Need to improve the defense and draft another lineman, but things don't look as bad as they did earlier in the year.

He is yet another example of why you have to let things play out before drawing conclusions and with QB's you really have to wait 3 years. Everyone and their mama labeled Young a bust at the end of last year and earlier this season.

Now saying that, let's see if this is him really turning the corner or if it's fools gold. But it has looked promising of late.

I hate how rookie QBs are being managed. Just being tossed into the fire in week 1. Bryce Young really shouldn't have started at all last year.

So he’s no longer a bigger bust than Jamarcus Russell as I was told here many times?

I mean he has 6 passing TDs in his 5 games back as a starter. Let’s pump the breaks a little here…

And their WRs leave much to be desired. Get him a true #1

I know no wants to hear from a Bama fan, but its beyond the 6 TDs. It's just how he's been playing. They are in game because of him, not out of them. His receivers have also dropped multiple TDs and long passes. His top 4 WRs are 3 rookies and the ghost of Adam Theilen. OL is actually great, he had to learn to trust them. But he's playing well, legitimately.

He threw some DIMES against the Chiefs and Bucs these last 2 weeks.

He's definitely playing better but also being patted on the head like he's not a #1 pick in this second season.

I hope he ends up being a legit starter, but...

This isn't even close to being true. The jury is still out.

It sucks for some of them, but this is entirely due to the rookie wage scale. A QB will never be more valuable to his team than his first 4 years in the league. Teams are trying to get as much as they can out of these guys during their rookie contract window while they can still load up a roster around them.

Good for him. When he was benched earlier this year he looked pretty checked out to me.

It’s almost like writing off a guy because of a bad first year on an awful team is judging too soon?
