Big 10 Coaches Believe Michigan Is Not The Same Team Since Scandal, Will Lose to Alabama

Despite a dramatic regular season punctuated by an investigation over alleged sign-stealing, No. 1 Michigan rolled to a 13-0 record heading into the College Football Playoff matchup in the Rose Bowl against No. 4 Alabama. But college football coaches The Athletic spoke to for this scouting report are convinced Michigan hasn’t been the same team since the NCAA’s investigation became public.

“They’re different now,” said one Big Ten head coach. “It makes a huge difference to know when blitzes are coming, so when you pick it up, you can really attack it. After that (investigation and resignation of staffer Connor Stalions), they weren’t always at the right place at the right time.”

The Athletic interviewed 10 Big Ten coaches, scouts and analysts to break down Michigan and how it matches up with a late-blooming Alabama team. They were granted anonymity to provide candid observations about the Wolverines.

One of the head coaches was adamant that the Wolverines had a significant advantage with signal-stealing intel, but he also pointed out that Michigan’s schedule was backloaded. The Wolverines faced the nation’s top three defenses (by yards allowed per game) in their last four games — and their other opponent was Maryland, which ranked No. 20 in the country in yards per play allowed. Coaches also buy that McCarthy has been bothered by a leg injury.

“I’ve heard he’s been banged up since the Penn State game,” said a Big Ten head coach. “He will have to make plays with his feet if Michigan’s gonna have a chance against Alabama. You ain’t gonna big boy Alabama (by just relying on your running backs). I think Alabama is way more talented. Michigan’s offense is not dynamic enough at the skill positions. Alabama’s gonna get heavy-handed with them. If Alabama can stop the run, Michigan has no chance. None.”

“I think Alabama will give them trouble with their front,” a Big Ten head coach added.

“I think it’s the same old thing with Michigan,” said a Big Ten secondary coach. “They’re extremely talented, but if someone can hold up up front with them, I think they’re just too one-dimensional. … They’ve got to get explosive plays on the perimeter somewhere, and those are gonna be hard to come by because Alabama can match up with them outside and still be stern enough against the run.

“Michigan is going to have to play such a clean game.”

One head coach said he wouldn’t be shocked if Michigan won — but he’s picking Alabama. “If Milroe plays like he has lately, I think that’ll be too much for Michigan. There’s nobody like him in the Big Ten. (Alabama) has figured out how to use him, and that’s scary.”

Alabama has come from almost losing the west to a super team in a month. Teams being fed rat poison.

Watching the selection show, the reaction from the Michigan players tells me they also believe they will lose to Alabama

Kanell and Dusty Dvoracek were talking about that last week. Michigan's O has only played well against Purdue since the scandal broke. That said, I think Moore's game plan was just grind these games out and don't do anything stupid. I don't think it was necessarily distrust in McCarthy.

I have 2k on Bama, so I will be happy either way.

Now, these are season numbers, so you could say throw them out. But, the mgoblog guy made a case for Michigan from a stats standpoint.

quote:

Michigan is not staring down the Soon To Be Philadelphia Eagles this time around. Georgia looked kind of off kilter much of the season and lost to Alabama, which means the SP+ rankings of the teams in the playoff look like this:

1. Michigan
6. Texas
7. Alabama
11. Washington

Texas is 7.5 points adrift of Michigan. Alabama is 8.4. Washington is 13.7. I do not quite believe this, largely because Penn State ranks 4th and Michigan is getting credit for stuffing them in a locker when pretty much any top-ten defense would have done the same. Vegas installed Michigan as a mere two-point favorite over Alabama, so they don't either. But this is a huge departure from what usually happens these days, which are lines that hew so closely to SP+ projections that Bill Connelly occasionally crabs about it on Twitter. Usually the numbers are good enough to get Vegas in line, but maybe not when the numbers would install Michigan more than a TD favorite right after Alabama beat Georgia.

Or you could visualize it like this:

Every single way you can systematically evaluate college football teams has Michigan a sizable favorite to win the national title. Connelly's numbers have it 50/50 between Michigan and the field. The reasons you would not believe those numbers range from misunderstandings of the way Michigan plays football (with maximum contempt for most opponents) to legitimate but probably not sufficient to close the gap. That latter is primarily Zak Zinter's injury.

Bama is going to frick them up and I hate admitting that. It’s clear as day in their reaction video too

That last 4 games of the season JJ McCarthy threw for the following:

60 yards 0 TD
141 yards 0TD 1 INT
148 yards 1 TD
147 yards 0 TD

I have no idea if there is any correlation, or if it is just when Michigan started playing good teams, but that's the reason I believe Bama will win.

Same team struggled to beat an awful Auburn team with an awful offense only surpassed in offensiveness by MSU in the SEC and gave up 24 points to them, and needed a miracle to beat them with Milroe.

Alabama may win, but they have not faced a defense like Michigan, and please don't say UGA, because this was not a typical UGA defense.

I think it will be a close game. Both teams score in the 20’s and one or two plays will be the difference. I’d bet on Bama but there is a reason Michigan is the current favorite.

Their schedule is what really blows me away. It's absolute dogshit. They've played three offenses in the top 50 all year.

Fair point, but Saban with a month to prepare is a beast. Michigan's also coming in with a beat up Oline. This is a bad matchup for them.

The 1 TD against OSU was actually an INT but oh well

BIG 10 would not have a problem with Harbaugh stealing Saban's signals.

I know that the Big Ten coaches hate Harbaugh but do they really believe this shite?
