Just got home from the game between the Columbia Fireflies (Mets Class A affiliate) and our Asheville Tourists (Rockies Class A affiliate). Tourists went into the bottom of the 9th down 6-3; loaded the bases with one out. Rockies 2015 first round draft pick triples driving in 3 runs making the score 6-6.

Now, Tourists winning run on third with one out. Fireflies elect to intentionally walk next two batters loading the bases with one out. Tourists batter ready for the pitch - it's a WP and the winning run scores from third.

What's anybody's thoughts on loading the bases in this situation? The first batter they walked was a .350 hitter, one of the leading hitters in the Sally League. The second batter they walked was about a .240 hitter.

Makes sense, set up a force at home (every base) for that matter.

Might as well, runner at 3rd is only one that matters.

I'm ok with loading the bases with one out, tie game, bottom of the ninth.Neither of those runs count. A pop fly to the outfield most likely scores the winning run. Any ball hit to the infield there is a force out at home at the very least, provided the infielders are playing in. The first option is to turn two and get to the plate. Second option is a force out at home and get the next batter out.

I'd be much more pissed at the closer for blowing a three run lead than walking bases loaded.

He would've scored anyways since he was on third. I like when minor league teams do things you wouldn't see in MLB

You're going to be playing up regardless.. Bases loaded allows for the force at home.

I think it puts too much pressure on the pitcher not to walk the winning run in.

Pretty standard. Or you can walk only the first guy, and lose the force at home. Either way I'm not pitching to a .350 hitter there.

The reply above mine is another reason to walk only one guy.

Yeah, that's my issue with intentionally walking the bases loaded as well. It leaves no room for error.

agreed. the force is nice. but with no margin for error, it gives the pitcher less room to work for the strikeout.

Well based on run expectancy charts from the last 15 years. The two scenarios only differ by .3% as far as the odds at least one runs scores(bases loaded is lower).

1st and 3rd is 2.3% lower than bases loaded.

That's probably what I would go with.

I never thought I'd see a thread mentioning the Columbia Fireflies on here. Awesome.

I'd have walked the first guy, then had my MI set up at double play depth, with the OF and corners in.

If the .240 hitter gets a hit or sac fly, then the run is scoring regardless.

And having the base open still allows the pitching to at least challenge the weaker hitter and not worry too much about the walk.

I'd pitch to that .240 hitter....because he's a .240 hitter and because pitcher is liable to throw batting practice pitches to ensure he doesn't walk anyone with bags full.

you should walk the first hitter, but not the second hitter.

It's high risk high reward. LSU had something similar in the regionals or supers (cant remember) where they had 0 outs and played infielders with bases loaded. Somehow got out of that one.

think it was the SEC tournament.

got the first out somehow, then got a line drive double play to third.

Only problem being that with corners in, the runner at first will take a huge lead and probably negate the double play...

What? The first baseman is already "playing in" while holding the runner at first on.
