I'm actually really happy for him. His NFL career could have gone the Johnny Manziel route if he didn't mature, but he did.

Glad someone remembers

even if Mahomes flops from here on out, 2 super bowls, 4 SB appearances, and 6 straight AFC championship game appearances is a bargain compared to almost any other QB contract in the NFL.

Take all that stuff away and Mahommes still has the most team friendly contract in the league in relation to his talent and performance and it’s been like that since the day he signed it.

Mahommes could’ve easily pushed for shorter or more fully GTD deals and gone to the well more frequently, but instead when for a very long contract that allows them to manipulate the cap each season much more easily, atleast in the early seasons. He gave KC the keys to do whatever they want with him as an asset

That's actually a little bit of a discount.

I'm interested when the league takes a stand and stops paying borderline top 10 guys huge contracts.

I've been thinking this for years but it hasn't happened yet. The fastest way to kill a Super Bowl window is to pay an above average QB like he's elite.

At what point do teams just start saying frick It, we are drafting a QB every draft and only playing rookie deal QB’s?

Plenty of teams already do this or try to do this. Problem is when you do stuff like draft Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson back to back, then the expensive known assets start looking real appealing

It’s like picking up a chick late at a bar, all about perspective, that 5/10 starts looking like a 10 when you look around and see a bunch of 2/10 and have recently been smashing a 1/10

Never. Most of these billionaire owners want to win. The difference in a 10-15 million on a contract to these guys is like most people deciding to put 2000 or 5000 down payment on a new car.

And most owners out there don’t view seasons as Super Bowl or bust like fans do

Some teams would kill to be a 10 win 2nd round playoff team on a consistent basis. There’s a lot of money and bragging you can get out of that, which is mostly what owning a sports team is about

Mahomes is turning out to be a bargain for the Chiefs.

The team and Mahomes both knew it would be down the road. By the end of that deal, Mahomes will probably be the 15th highest paid QB in the league.

When Daniel jones and Derek Carr get 40M seems like a steal.

Mahomes has so many national endorsement deals he may not feel the need to squeeze every last nickel out of the Chiefs. A CAP friendly deal keeps the team winning, keeps his player profile high, which increases his marketability. Smart negotiating on his part, really.

Lol we'll see what the structure is like, but I highly doubt 40 mil is going to handcuff the Bucs here. And the cap just keeps going brrrrr

Supply and demand. Of all the people on the planet, there aren't 32 that are capable of being a decent NFL starting QB

Keep in mind Tampa had a $35m cap hit in 2023 for Brady. Adding up Bakers base plus incentives pushes it out past $42m when adding in Brady hit. There is no Brady cap hit in 24 so in a manner of speaking if Baker gets $40m it’s a wash year over year.

For Baker he took a huge discount in 23 to prove himself. If one assumes he was worth $40m in 23, Tampa got a great deal. TB made a lot of extra money having that home playoff game.
