The Braves and left-hander Chris Sale have agreed to a new deal, which will pay him $38MM over the next two years. There’s also an $18MM club option for 2026. Sale was already under contract via an extension he previously signed with the Red Sox but this will overwrite that.

does this new deal eliminate the deferred payments?

From what I've seen, yes.
Boston still pays the $17 million, so that covers his salary for this season plus a million extra. Braves on the hook for $21 million over the next two seasons. No buyout of the 2026 club option.
He is also donating 1% of salary to the Braves Foundation.

I’d like to admit that I initially looked at this trade wrong.
I love Grissom, and hate to lose him, but 1) he doesn’t fit anywhere in the organization, and more importantly 2) my first thought when we got eliminated last year was that we looked soft—like maybe we needed to add a couple of assholes on the roster. Everyone seemed a little too comfortable—a little too whatever. Harper, Castellanos, etc. wanted it bad and I truly believe their confidence and brashness psyched our guys out. A guy like Chris Sale won’t blink in that situation, and I’d bet it becomes contagious.

Yes.
Also significant change to his CBT number.
Breakdown
Pre Extension
2024 Actual Salary: $17.5M
2024 Actual Salary paid by ATL: $500k
2024 CBT Salary: $8.55M
2024 Money Owed by Atlanta: ~$3.5M (expected to take Braves into second CBT threshold +$500K portion of salary)
2025 CBT Salary: $20M if option is exercised
2025 Actual Salary: $20M Club Option
2025 Money Owed by Atlanta: $0 ($5M deferred to 2040 if declined)
2039 Money Owed by Atlanta: $10M
2040 Money Owed by Atlanta: $5M (if option is declined)
Total Money Owed by Atlanta: $18.5M for one year or $33.5M for two years
Reworked Deal
2024 Actual Salary: $17M ($16M salary + $1M trade assignment. Paid in full by Boston)
2024 Actual Salary paid by ATL: $0
2024 CBT Salary: $10.5M
2024 Money Owed by Atlanta: ~$3M (expected to take Braves into second CBT threshold)
2025 CBT Salary: $10.5M
2025 Actual Salary: $22M
2025 Money Owed by Atlanta: $22M
2026 CBT Salary: $18M if option is exercised
2026 Actual Salary: $18M Club Option with no buyout
2026 Money Owed by Atlanta: $18M if Club Option is Exercised
2039 Money Owed by Atlanta: $0
2040 Money Owed by Atlanta: $0
Total Money Owed by Atlanta: $25M for two years or $43M for three years
Eliminated all deferrals in exchange for about $2M more in CBT salary and an extra year essentially. Not much risk in terms of total money added.
Smoothed out the CBT hit for next year if he has a good year.
Braves have taken on a ton of CBT money this offseason and have set themselves up very well for next offseason. They are right now projected to be between $60 and $80M under the first threshold depending on the Ozuna decision.
All the extensions and CBT smoothing is really going to start coming in handy.
Also significant change to his CBT number.

I may come to regret it, but I don’t have an issue with giving up Grissom. His bat is his carrying tool and wasn’t strong enough to overcome his defense at short or even force his way to the majors with work in LF/DH. I think he develops into a quality regular at 2B, but not a perennial all star like Albies. I also see the possibility that, if we held on to him through spring training, he’d lose value.
The Red Sox are a pretty good org. They know all this about Grissom too, and still made the trade. Sale is making decent money, but its not an amount that would be prohibitive for a team like the Red Sox.
That they were willing to get him for a prospect with big worts like Grissom tells me theres kind of a turd in the punch bowl there. Why not wait and do this at the deadline for a premium if you're the Red Sox if you aren't at least fairly worried that his arm breaks?

Lol wut?
A 21-year-old infielder with good bat to ball and baserunning skills is not "big warts" just because he can't play SS.

He hasn't shown he can play anywhere in the infield at a level most teams are going to be happy with, and he couldn't crack it in left either or he would have played this year.

He played 2nd just fine in 2022.

He's playing left in Puerto Rico right now. Stop being dumb.

How do you even quantify this?
Sounds like a vague reason to explain away why our bats got cold against Philly. It's not like the Diamondbacks were loaded with assholes.

It's an abstract thing fans/sports radio uses to try to rationalize why their team loses.
Their is no way to quantify if a team is "soft".

Philly definitely had/has a mental edge over us in the playoffs. Just because you can't quantify it doesn't mean it isn't real. Baseball, golf especially are super mental games. Easy to get on tilt.
Harper punked Arcia and really the whole team last year.

Having an edge mentally over someone/group of people doesn't make them "soft", it just means that that team is psyched out by the other team.
And FWIW, I'm not disagreeing on your point, I actually agree about the Phils having a mental edge, but that doesn't mean the Braves are "soft."

Arica let Harper punk him out. IMO he should have told Harper ‘You’re damn right I said it. If you don’t like it then you can frick right on off’. Instead he wouldn’t look him in the eyes when Harper stared him down both times. Charmin soft Arcia was also worried about what a fan in Philly was saying, to the point he was interacting with the fans in the stands.
I want someone on this team who would flat out stomp a mud hole in someone’s arse when someone pulls shite like Harper did. Give me someone like Amir Garrett who would charge a whole damn dugout when they talked shite, or Yasiel Puig who took zero shite from anyone, or Rougned Odor who popped Joey Bats in the mouth. I want a hockey enforcer on this baseball team. I don’t care if they are worth a shite at this point or not. That team needs someone with a set of balls, in a bad way.
