Will totally depend on Sale’s health but if he stays healthy you just added another starter with ace stuff for October.

Guessing red Sox kick in half his salary

The Braves and Red Sox have agreed to a major trade, as Chris Sale will head to Atlanta in exchange for infield prospect Vaughn Grissom, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports. The Sox will also include $17MM in the deal to cover a big portion of Sale’s $27.5MM salary for the 2024 season, as per the Boston Globe’s Alex Speier. Sale had a full no-trade clause that he has waived to facilitate the move.

For a club like Atlanta with such a high floor this feels like a great move. When he’s been right physically he’s still really good. You don’t need the 160 IP type durability and predictability if you’re Atlanta, you’re chasing postseason excellence. Do what you can to make him right in October and you have another frontline starter at a relatively cheap cost depending on what Boston is kicking in

2025 team option for $20 mil. Health dependent but I really like this move. Wish Vaughn the best. Wonder if the Sox will play him at 2nd

2/30 deal basically money wise for sale that is a steal. Considering current market

Red Sox are my favorite AL team, so at least I can keep cheering for Grissom.

Roster is mostly set now you would think. Possible platoon partner for Kelenic only real need.

ZiPS projection

Acuña 7.1
Albies 3.3
Riley 4.6
Olson 3.8
Ozuna 2.1
Murphy/TDA 4.5
Kelenic 1.1
Arcia 2.0
Harris 4.0

Fried 4.4
Strider 4.4
Sale 2.6
Morton 2.6
Elder 2.2

Bullpen 5.0
Iglesias
Minter
Matzek
Lee
Bummer
Johnson
Jimenez
Lopez

5 wins better than the Dodgers according to ZiPS and 9 wins better than anyone else.

10 mill for this year is deferred. 5 for next if the option vests.
So I'm not sure what the actual number is or what the pv was when it was signed to get his lt number.

The Red Sox are taking on a flier on Lucas Giolito. The sides are reportedly in agreement on a two-year, $38.5MM guarantee that allows the CAA client to opt out after the first season.

I’m very glad the Braves finally addressed the rotation. I like the trade for Sale in and of itself, and if healthy is a solid option for a postseason starter.

I do look at the Giolito signing and had a few second thoughts until I remember the luxury tax implications.

Yep w/as deep of a pen as we have we can limit his innings during the RS to keep him fresh for October.

This is a typical AA move. Buy low, sell high, low risk/high reward.

If his health is right this is a great move, it will give us 3 power arms at the top of the rotation.

If he’s healthy, it’s an awesome move.

Problem is that he hasn’t been fully healthy and at his best since like 2018.

Also, keep him away from the scissors

Feels like we could have packaged Vaughn in for someone more reliable.

Considering we just gave up our last position player prospect for what is possibly a one year rental, this is arguably the most "win-now" move that AA has ever made. Can't be mad at him for that because I've been asking him to do that for 2 years now.

Only problem I have with it is that the only reason our rotation faltered the way it did in the postseason the last two years was due to health (Strider in 22, Fried and Morton last year) and we just added to the equation one of the more notoriously injury-prone pitchers in recent years.

Don’t pitch Sale until July and then use him every 8th day. All we need him for is game 3.

Grossman, Kike, Duvall would be decent right-handed bat options. Wouldn't be opposed to bringing Pillar back for that role. either
