That's dumb.

You’re right. Don’t pitch him until late August. Heck, you probably could talk me into agreeing to not pitch him until September.

You have to excuse me, you've said so much stupid shite regarding the Braves the last two years, I have no idea when you are trying to make a joke or not.

Sale is not a power arm. His fastball velo is below league average.

Apparent that LHP was a big point of emphasis for us this offseason.

Sale, Bummer, Kerr and Perdomo were all added this offseason, joining Fried, Minter, Lee and Matzek.

It's the offseason, so I'm going to pretend he will be. I'm also going to pretend that AJSS takes the 5th spot from Elder.

Fried
Strider
Sale
Morton
AJSS

I can frick with that.

Yea, lhp wasn't a counter move to the dodgers at all.

Some dude on Reddit made it make sense:
quote:

Braves: A contending team acquires player that offers asymmetric risk:reward while giving up a player that just doesn’t have a spot on this team.

This is a trade that elevates the ceiling of the team going into the season while keeping the floor exactly the same.

We’ll see how it plays out.

It never not made sense. We traded away a dude with a good bat but, at best, was only going to going to get sporadic reps against LHP's in a position that he only began playing a month ago. In return, we got a dude who, at his best, can give us the most dominant front 3 of any rotation in baseball. It's an easy trade to make, even before we get into the fact that Boston is paying the majority of his 2024 salary.

The only reason I have to pause is because we added a dude with crazy injury history to a rotation with its own crazy injury history.

dude.

Fangraphs has his average FB velo at 94.1 and Savant at 93.8 (47th percentile) so he's right around average. But his 10.96 K/9 for a SP is excellent and would be playoff worthy/"power arm" level to me. He was 88th percentile in K% last season. Still missing a ton of bats. If he stays healthy (big if), he's still a very solid pitcher.

I like the move, but I am not particularly high on Grissom. I don't think he will stick in the infield and I'm not sure he has the power to play in a corner OF spot.

Sale has averaged around 94-96 mph on his FB throughout pretty much his entire career. He's never really relied on raw velo to overpower hitters, he uses his excellent slider and funky/deceptive delivery to rack up the whiffs, which he has been consistently great at when he can stay on the field.

The Braves as an org very clearly have a preference for pitchers with elite breaking balls that can get whiffs. Ray Kerr, Pierce Johnson, Joe Jimenez, Reynaldo Lopez, Charlie Morton, et al.

So that we don't enter the 10th inning with Ozuna or Murphy/TDA as the ghost runner on 2nd.

Here's a 10 K performance from Sale back in September.

Fastball velo is way down at 90-91 here (He did have another 10 K game in May where his fastball was at 96). His slider is still filthy. Same arm slot as the fastball and same plane as the fastball until it breaks way late.

Considering we just gave up our last position player prospect for what is possibly a one year rental, this is arguably the most "win-now" move that AA has ever made. Can't be mad at him for that because I've been asking him to do that for 2 years now.

I may come to regret it, but I don’t have an issue with giving up Grissom. His bat is his carrying tool and wasn’t strong enough to overcome his defense at short or even force his way to the majors with work in LF/DH. I think he develops into a quality regular at 2B, but not a perennial all star like Albies. I also see the possibility that, if we held on to him through spring training, he’d lose value.
