I wouldn't call it his prime. He probably had one or two more good years left in him.

Got #3000 in his last regular season game. I still think he had the best arm from right field I've ever seen.

Jim Clark- 1968 Two time Formula 1 World Champion. Died after hitting a tree at Hockenheim. Widely hailed as the greatest driver ever to sit in an open wheel cockpit. Only driver ever to have won the Formula 1 world championship and Indy 500 in the same year(1965).

It's not even close. I watched pre game fielding practice when he played against the Astros.

The Pirate coach stood at the pitching mound and hit fungo to the outfielders. He hit a deep one to Roberto and yelled '2nd'. The shortstop came over to the bag but instead of standing he went into a catcher's crouch.

Roberto caught the ball just short of the track and threw the ball UNDERHANDED to second base.

The SS didn't even have to move his glove. He raised his right hand and yelled STEEE RIKE.

The other Pirates players just smiled and shook their heads as if saying 'OMG' did he just do that?

In 1949, nearly all members of the Italian football club Torino died in a plane crash returning from a match in Portugal.

That club, dubbed Il Grande Torino, won 5 straight Italian Serie A championships (the last declared after the crash, as the season was not yet complete - they finished the season fielding a youth side; out of respect each of their opponents did the same).

11 members of that club formed the backbone of the Italian national team, including probable captain Valentino Mazzola. During a 1947 Italy friendly match, 10 of the 11 players on the field were Torinos. The Italian national team traveled by boat to the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.

Ivo Van Damme (21 February 1954 – 29 December 1976) was a Belgian middle-distance runner. Took silver at 800meters and 1500 meters at 76 Olympics at age 22. Killed in a car crash later that year.

Valeri Kharlamov (33). Widely considered the greatest left wing on the Soviet team, his death in 1981 robbed him of a few more World Championships. The Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov may be the greatest line in hockey history. He did in a car accident.

John Tuggle, NYG running back

If you've never seen the 30 for 30 on him ("The Irrelevant Giant") it's one of my favorites. Just have the tissues handy.

In a virtually meaningless Formula Two race.

Don't get me wrong, driving drunk is awful/horrible/terrible, but it still doesn't change that he had a ton of potential.

US Women's champ was on SI cover soon before, was one of the original examples of the cover curse

US Boxing team in 1980, probably included a future world champ or two:

Eric Andolsek had to be one of the most bizarre athlete early deaths. Weed-eating his front yard near the highway and gets hit by a truck.

Ben Wilson, top national HS basketball recruit, shot on the streets of Chicago in 1984 at age 17.
