Anyone else find minor league baseball a little strange from a fan perspective?

Take the Montgomery Biscuits for example. Lets say they are playing the Columbus Clingstones (Braves double a team)

We know probably 95% of the baseball fans in Montgomery are Braves fans, yet they will still root for the hometown team when they play even though they are fans of the opponents affiliate. Just seems odd how that works.
I remember the last time I went to a Shuckers game, I saw a handful of Brewers stuff, but even then most people repping MLB stuff had on Braves gear.

Wondering if anyone is a fan of an MLB team simply because you live in a place where an affiliate is located?

The minor league baseball teams change MLB affiliation quite often, don't they? As such, if you care to root for the minor league team's MLB affiliate, you'll be changing MLB teams quite often.

Of course you want to see players you rooted for develop and have success in the majors
why wouldn't you root for the Major League franchise

Lots of affiliates these days are in the footprint of their MLB team, so that helps. Here in Corpus Christi, the Hooks feed the Astros.

As for places like Birmingham and Montgomery, it’s different. Those are historic minor league towns. Lots of times you end up pulling for the players, and a good chunk of them get traded before hitting the bigs anyway. I think MiLB is about fans getting close to the action, enjoying the game on a more pure level, watching the cheesy entertainment, and not paying an arm and a leg for it.

Players that aren’t bonus babies aren’t making much anyway, and that’s after they bumped up pay.

Okay. Take the Arkansas Travs for example. They are with the Mariners. Half of Little Rock are Rangers fans. Why would they root for the Mariners when they are a division rival .

The results of those games, wins & losses, don’t really mean anything for the Rangers or Mariners

It’s mostly just local fans supporting their local team

Because they are cheering on the minor league team. Not the major league affiliate.

Affiliates change. Not to mention most of the players won’t make it to that parent club anyways. Stuck in minors, traded, etc

I think you overestimate the population that gives a shite about the rangers

We like our beer flat as can be, we like our dogs with mustard and relish. We got a great pitcher, what's his name?
Well, we can't even spell it - We don't worry about the pennant much, we just like to see the boys hit it deep. There’s nothing like the view from the cheap seats

I grew up 45 min SW of Austin, TX.
Rangers/Astros were teams 1A and 1B for me, especially considering they were still in different divisions/leagues at that time.

The majority of baseball games I went to though were the SA Missions. Back then they were mainly the Seattle affiliate (then maybe the Padres).

So for me it was location based.

Well, they aren’t on the Mariners yet. They are on the Travelers. Arkansas beating Frisco has absolutely zero impact on the MLB teams. I’ve seen countless stars come through that league end up on different franchises at the end of the day. Going to a Travs game isn’t rooting for the Mariners, it’s supporting young guys trying to make it big, supporting the local economy, and having fun.

Nah. Went to Chattanooga Lookouts games regularly but that never made me pull for the Mariners or Reds.

My closest minor league to me now is an affiliate of my MLB team though.

I chose mine by a child's perpetive. The football team is good, must mean the baseball team is good. Had a favorite player, and found out by cards, he was from Metairie, LA, so been a fan of the Giants since.
Step Dad and brother many years later, were Braves fans because of the 3A team
I was Memphis, and think The Chicks were part of KC, don't remember
