re: Anyone else find minor league baseball a little strange from a fan perspective?

If the missions played the Mississippi braves or whatever they are now I would be a little conflicted for sure. Luckily they aren’t even in the same league

You kind of have to change your expectations as a minor league fan. I've seen some stacked teams decimated by promotions and neutered for the post season. For that reason, the better teams can be less likely to win championship series.

The Barons here in Birmingham do a good job with the new ballpark and other activities. The games are fun to go to. Not necessarily from a pure baseball aspect, but they do Friday night fireworks, Thirsty Thursday beer promotions, there's one day earlier in the week, I forget if it is Monday or Tuesday, but it is something like $1 hot dog night. They're also great for large groups. We took about 40-50 people last year, and are doing it again this year. For around $25 a person, you get admission, and a combo meal that they come serve all at once. It was something like a hot dog, fries or chips, and a fountain drink, and you get a little reserved area with benches, tables, and a barstool area out past the seats along the foul lines where they bring you all of the food.

Plus you have a nice brewery within walking distance from the stadium where people can hang out before the gates open. Good People is there. There's also a Buffalo Wild Wings on the other side of the stadium, an arcade with a bar and grill inside, and some other places nearby as well. The actual games are fun, but it is more of an event for families to go to than going just for the game. Since they moved downtown from the Hoover Met it really took off.

i dont think the players liked playing summer baseball games in New Orleans very much. they were always pretty brutal weather-wise but got some great zephyr/baby cake promo gear from my time going out to the shrine on airline

This just tells me NO isn’t really a baseball town. The stadium was in a bad location anyway. Plenty of minor league franchises have thrived without having a close affiliate. See Birmingham, Hartford, San Antonio, Tulsa, Little Rock, Indianapolis, Charlotte, Durham, Nashville, etc.

NO is more interested in football. Not a knock, just what it is.

I never really cared who the Zephyrs were affiliated with. I just went to watch a game. They changed affiliates so often I even forgot who they were with at times

New York Mets (2007–2008)
Washington Nationals (2005–2006)
Houston Astros (1997–2004)
Milwaukee Brewers (1993–1996)

Personally, I always thought a downtown ballpark would do well in New Orleans. That’s a trend in the minors. You can have legitimate family-friendly entertainment near the tourists that flock to the city. Again, just my opinion.
