HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - After eleven years and 101 straight losses, the Columbia Eagles are winners again.
Hosting Greensboro’s Raiders in a rare Saturday evening game, Columbia soon found itself trailing, in a 14-0 hole. The very first offensive play for the Eagles was a pick-6 for Greensboro.
But, thanks to some Greensboro turnovers, the Eagles tied things up in the second quarter. In the final seconds before halftime, they took a 20-14 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Eagles did not get off the gas. They added three more touchdowns, while keeping the Raiders off the scoreboard. Final score: 41-14
Head coach Sammie Coates took over the program last year. He made it through the 2025 season with just 28 players. That’s about half what the competition has. This year - he’s working with a full 60 person roster. “They seen the culture change, they seen the shift and what we was trying to build, they came out. That was huge. That was my biggest problem last year. Numbers,” Coates said in a pre-season interview with 48. “They buying in because we show we really care about them,”
Columbia will try to start a two-game winning streak when they host East Limestone Friday night.

It takes a lot to turn around a complete dumpster fire, who lost 91 in a row before you arrived. Wild he was able to do it week 1 of season 2.

Going from 28 to 60 players helped. When I played, we usually had 35 players going against teams with 60+. We held our own the first half but usually was out of gas by end of third. W/L record showed it too.

How do you even let that happen. I get a school might be understaffed, few students, tough district, etc etc but I would have to think at some point in those 101 games you'd encounter and beat someone just as bad.

So you consider winning one game, “turning it around”?

It’s a hell of a start
Every streak starts with 1
Every streak starts with 1

Was looking at their max preps
For whatever reason they seemingly never played a school lower then 5A through all of this?
They finally won against a 3A school
You'd think they would have tried that a lot earlier in this process

A high school that lost 100 games in a row getting an ex NFL player to coach them is pretty impressive

I think after the first year of going ofer I would be looking at alternative teams to play.

After 11 straight defeated seasons, absolutely.

Oh so it is the same Sammie Coates. I just thought that was a joke at first. Good for them. One win might not seem like a lot to other people, but I guarantee it probably does to that school.

He and Nick Marshall had a great rapport at Auburn.
