After formal ACC exit notice, Florida State now says 'we never said we wanted to leave'

Nearly 16 months after its formal notice of withdrawal from the ACC, Florida State has taken a new and odd public stance as its acrimonious lawsuit against the conference continues to play out.
Who said we ever wanted to leave the ACC?
“We’re in the league the last time I looked,” FSU athletic director Mike Alford told USA TODAY Sports during the Sports Business Journal Intercollegiate Forum. “We never said we wanted to leave the league.”

It now appears the reality that the Seminoles have nowhere to go is settling in.
“We’ve always questioned the revenue distribution,” Alford said. “Go back in history, you will never see the president or myself say we want out of the league. We have great peer institutions, we’re a lot alike. We’ve always had great communication. Jim (Phillips) and I from day 1. We’re trying to solve the problems.”

The Big 10 and SEC said thanks but no thanks. Miami is a better fit for the BIG than they are and the SEC already has Florida. FSU adds nothing to either conference that they don’t or wouldn’t already have.

Very humbling for Mr. Alford.

Is expansion really done then?
I find that hard to believe with the playoff format about to change again in a couple of years

It is for ACC teams until their current agreement is up

South Florida got AAU membership before FSU.
I do hope they end up in the SEC though.

FSU didn’t bring much to the table for the SEC. Tallahassee isn’t that big of a media market and both Auburn and Gainesville are within 150 miles. So thats a TV market the SEC kind of already has. SEC doesn’t gain new TV markets to use for negotiating bigger media rights deals, but gains an extra school to split the pie with.
B1G would make more sense from conference media rights value standpoint…and they apparently don’t care much for being contiguous geographically.

FSU football is still a top 15 brand. This isn't 2012 anymore, it's not about TV markets.

Are they? Obviously, subjective criteria, but quickly off the top of my head:
Notre Dame
Texas
Texas A&M
Oklahoma
Michigan
Ohio State
Penn State
Miami
USC
Oregon
Alabama
LSU
Georgia
Florida
Tennessee
Clemson
Washington
Nebraska
Clemson
I guess you could plug them in there or swap a school or two out.

Why exactly is it not about tv markets any longer?
Easy money the SEC’s next move is going after UNC and UVA.

SEC - Texas, Oklahoma
B1G - USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington
ACC - SMU, Cal, Stanford
Big 12 expansion was more along the lines of survival reasons, but they still only added teams that brought new markets: Houston, BYU, UCF, and Cincinnati…not incluing the PAC-12 teams.
No major conference added schools in markets that were already in their footprint.

Pretty easily since you have Clemson on the list twice.
But seriously, FSU strictly as a brand is easily the equal of a number of those schools.
