Silver noted the European soccer model as an inspiration for the idea that is still, "in the conceptual phase." Silver reportedly envisions both a midseason tournament during All-Star Weekend, as well as an end-of-season tournament to determine "the last two playoff spots in the East and West.

"It’s incumbent on me to constantly be looking at other organizations and seeing what it is we can do better and learn from them,” Silver told Stein. “In the case of European soccer, I think there is something we can learn from them."

He also mentioned he's not interested in cutting down from 82 games.

Say you add one tournament, that's at least another 10-20 games for the winning team (depending on format.) You already have players "managing loads", how the hell would this help at all?

Everyone only cares about the playoffs / finals as is. This would require a shift of focus on a grand scale and I don't see how that's possible.

I don't get why all these commissioners are so hell bent on fundamentally changing their sport.

It’d be way more like the European league cups where teams rest their starters and play their youth players and reserves versus the champions league. No thanks.

The first one is ok, whatever I guess.

But I think the second one is an absolutely awful idea. Especially when you've already played 82 games to determine hierarchy.
On top of that, what are the other teams doing in the meantime?

I can get on board w/ the all-star tournament. Replace the All-Star game all together and hold some kind of tourny w/ postseason implications.

If you're rolling through the season you would have the option to rest of starters and not compete.

If you know making the playoffs will be tough, go all in on the All-Star tournament in hopes of sneaking into the 8 spot.

Not a terrible idea, but doing it while still playing 82 games is terrible execution.

Does Silver realize that there is no postseason tournaments in the top European domestic leagues? Also, the main appeal of a tournament like the FA Cup is seeing lower level professional teams playing against the top teams in the Premier League and having the chance to knock them off similar to the NCAA basketball Tournament. That is not possible without a promotion/relegation system in professional basketball.

Adam Silver...he is quite possibly the most over rated and overly thought of commissioner, possibly ever. He is a total pushover. The players know it and that's why they love him, because he bends the knee to them time and time again. His NBA is in real trouble once Lebron retires. Just look at the ratings for this year and the playoff ratings. It speaks volumes. I absolutely think he has butchered the draft lottery as well. I honestly don't believe there was a reason to mess with the way it was. I just don't get the admiration for him? He is NOT good for the game.

Are those tourneys included in the 82? If not, frick that shite.
Season needs to be cut back to 70 games.

I think there will be one, which will be a "last chance", to decide the #7 and #8 seed in each conference.

In the last week before the playoffs, have 7 and 8 get a bye while 9, 10, 11, and 12 play to get to them.

Yes let’s have a tournament to decide the 7 & 8 seed so they can get swept the following week in the actual playoffs

The best business models realize when change is needed. It was needed long ago.

This is anecdotal, but within the last 3-4 years, my interest, and everyone I know, in watching the NBA playoffs has dwindled to 0. Little to no intrigue anymore

Money. They can't reduce the number of games without reducing the money teams get from tickets and TV. From a quality standpoint there are already far too many games or he'd be pushing adding more.
